RWL is a raw image file format produced by Leica digital cameras. It contains minimally processed image data directly from the camera's sensor, allowing for extensive post-processing flexibility. RW2 is a similar raw image format, but it is used by Panasonic Lumix cameras. Both formats are proprietary and designed to retain maximum image quality for professional editing.

Why convert RWL to RW2?

Converting RWL to RW2 may be necessary if you are working in a workflow or with software that better supports Panasonic's RW2 format, or if you need to standardize raw files from different camera brands for easier processing and archiving.

How to convert RWL to RW2

Direct conversion between RWL and RW2 is not commonly supported by most image editors or converters, as both are proprietary raw formats. However, you can use an intermediate format such as DNG (Digital Negative), which is widely supported and preserves raw data.

1. Convert RWL to DNG: Use Adobe DNG Converter (free from Adobe) to convert your RWL files to DNG. Open the software, select your RWL files, and follow the prompts to convert.
2. Convert DNG to RW2: There is currently no mainstream software that converts DNG directly to RW2, as RW2 is a proprietary format. If you specifically need RW2, you may need to use Panasonic camera software or check for specialized tools, but this is rarely supported. Instead, most workflows use DNG as the universal raw format.

• Adobe DNG Converter: Best for converting RWL to DNG, preserving raw data for further editing.
• RawTherapee or darktable: Both can open RWL and DNG files for editing and export to common formats like TIFF or JPEG, but not RW2.

Note: Direct RWL to RW2 conversion is not supported by mainstream tools. DNG is the recommended universal raw format for cross-brand compatibility.
