Understanding RWL and ABR file formats

RWL files are raw image files produced by Leica digital cameras. These files contain unprocessed image data directly from the camera sensor, allowing for extensive post-processing and high-quality image output. ABR files, on the other hand, are Adobe Photoshop Brush files. They store collections of brush presets used for digital painting and editing within Adobe Photoshop.

Can you convert RWL to ABR?

Direct conversion from RWL (a raw image format) to ABR (a brush preset format) is not straightforward, as these formats serve entirely different purposes. However, you can use an RWL image as the basis for creating a custom Photoshop brush, which is then saved as an ABR file.

How to create an ABR brush from an RWL image

1. Open the RWL file in a raw image editor such as Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw (part of Photoshop). Adjust the image as needed and export it as a standard image format like PNG or JPEG.
2. Open the exported image in Adobe Photoshop.
3. Select the area you want to use as a brush using the Marquee or Lasso tool.
4. Go to Edit → Define Brush Preset… and name your new brush.
5. Your brush is now available in the Brushes panel. To save it as an ABR file, open the Brushes panel, select your brush, and choose Export Selected Brushes… to save as an ABR file.
