How to convert gpx to midi file

A route recorder may produce a GPX file while a synthesizer, DAW, or notation program requires MIDI. The extension .gpx is also used by Guitar Pro 6, so the correct conversion method depends on whether the file contains geographic data or musical notation.
Identify the GPX file
GPS Exchange Format is an XML-based geographic format used by Garmin devices and Connect, Strava, Komoot, Gaia GPS, cycling computers, hiking applications, and GIS software. It stores tracks, routes, and waypoints with latitude, longitude, optional elevation, timestamps, names, and extensions such as heart rate or cadence. Opening the file in a text editor normally reveals XML tags such as <gpx> and <trkpt>.
Guitar Pro 6 also uses .gpx, but its files are native Guitar Pro documents containing tablature, notation, instruments, effects, and other score data. They are not GPS files. Do not submit a Guitar Pro document to a geographic GPX converter; use Guitar Pro to export it.
What MIDI contains
MIDI files store musical performance instructions rather than recorded sound. They can contain note numbers, note-on and note-off events, velocity, tempo, controller data, instrument assignments, and multiple tracks. DAWs such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Cubase, and REAPER, notation software, hardware keyboards, synthesizers, and other MIDI-compatible applications can import them.
MIDI files are generally much smaller than audio files and remain editable: pitches, timing, instruments, and tempo can be changed without re-recording. Playback requires a synthesizer, virtual instrument, sound module, or MIDI-compatible hardware; a MIDI file does not contain the instrument audio.
Convert a GPS GPX file
For a GPS Exchange Format file, use the built-in converter on 101convert.com. It runs without installing software and is available free of charge.
- Open the GPX-to-MIDI converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the geographic file, such as
route.gpx. - Choose MIDI as the output format and start the conversion.
- Download the resulting
.midor.midifile. - Import it through File → Import in a DAW or notation program, or open it with a MIDI player.
GPS data has no standard musical equivalent. A converter must define its own mapping, such as elevation to pitch, route distance to note duration, speed to tempo, or timestamps to event timing. If the converter provides controls for pitch range, tempo, timestamps, elevation, sampling, or tracks, set them before conversion. Retain the original GPX file because MIDI cannot normally preserve its coordinates, route geometry, elevation metadata, or GPS extensions.
Convert a Guitar Pro GPX file
Open the file in Guitar Pro 6 or a compatible Guitar Pro version, then use File → Export → MIDI. Select the required tracks or instruments and save the result as song.mid. The export can preserve musical notes and timing, but MIDI will not retain Guitar Pro-specific notation, tablature symbols, articulations, page layout, or some effects. The exact export options depend on the Guitar Pro version.
Quality and compatibility limits
A recorded GPS track may contain hundreds or thousands of points. Converting every point can create an unnecessarily dense sequence of short notes, so simplify the route or sample points at fixed distance intervals when the converter supports those options.
Elevation is optional and can contain gaps, repeated values, device noise, or measurements from different vertical reference systems. A file without usable elevation needs another mapping attribute, such as latitude, longitude, speed, or time. Timestamps may represent real elapsed time, but a basic conversion can ignore them and assign equal note lengths. Time-aware output can preserve pauses and speed changes while producing long rests or irregular rhythms.
GPS-to-MIDI conversion is therefore an interpretation, not a lossless format change. Different tools can produce completely different melodies from the same route. MIDI playback also varies between applications because synthesizers use different instrument sounds, and some importers ignore program changes, controllers, tempo events, or track metadata.
