Convert NWC to MIDI

A sequencer, notation program, hardware keyboard, or media player may require MIDI instead of a NoteWorthy Composer score. Exporting to MIDI makes the notes and playback events portable, editable, and usable with other instrument sound sets.

What the formats contain

NWC is the proprietary score format used by NoteWorthy Composer, a Windows notation and composition program used by composers, teachers, students, and arrangers. An NWC file stores musical notation, including staves, notes, rests, durations, key and time signatures, lyrics, dynamics, articulations, and playback settings.

MIDI is an event-based performance format, normally saved with a .mid or .midi extension. It stores events such as note-on and note-off messages, timing, tempo, velocity, program changes, controller data, and sometimes lyrics; it does not contain recorded audio or the visual page layout of the score. MIDI files are compact and can be edited by sequencers, imported into notation software, sent to keyboards, and played through software synthesizers.

Export with NoteWorthy Composer

1. Open the .nwc file in NoteWorthy Composer. Use the same or a newer major version when possible; older NWC files may be converted automatically when opened.
2. Check the score before exporting. Confirm staff order, tempo, instrument assignments, repeats, lyrics, dynamics, and any playback-only instructions.
3. Choose File → Export → MIDI or the equivalent MIDI export command in your version.
4. Choose a destination and save with a .mid extension. Select MIDI type 1 if the dialog offers it and the destination supports multiple tracks; use type 0 for hardware or software that requires a single-track file.
5. Open the result in a MIDI player, sequencer, or notation program and check every staff, tempo change, repeat, and instrument. Play the file through the intended synthesizer because MIDI contains instructions, not sound.

NoteWorthy Composer is the most reliable converter because it interprets the program’s own notation and playback data. The exact menu labels and available MIDI options vary between releases; the current official Windows application is commonly identified as NoteWorthy Composer 2.75.

Online converters and alternative software

General-purpose services such as CloudConvert, Convertio, and Zamzar should not be treated as NWC converters unless their current format list explicitly accepts .nwc. Many services accept MIDI but not NoteWorthy Composer files. Do not rename .nwc to .mid; changing the extension does not change the file format.

If NoteWorthy Composer is unavailable, first check an online service that specifically lists NWC input and review its privacy policy before uploading an unpublished score. MuseScore, DAWs, and ordinary MIDI utilities generally cannot open proprietary NWC files directly, so exporting from NoteWorthy Composer is preferable to using an unsupported importer. After local export, online MIDI tools can convert the resulting MIDI to other supported formats, but they cannot recover NWC notation from a renamed file.

Quality and compatibility limits

MIDI preserves a performance representation rather than the complete printed score. Page layout, fonts, beaming, spacing, most notation symbols, and other visual details are lost. Some NWC ornaments, articulations, dynamics, repeats, grace notes, and special objects may be approximated as MIDI timing, velocity, controller, or note events, or may have no MIDI equivalent.

Playback can differ between applications because each synthesizer uses different instrument sounds and interprets controllers differently. Multiple staves may become separate MIDI tracks, but track names, channel assignments, percussion mapping, and program changes should be verified after import. If the destination needs editable notation, export to MusicXML when the NWC software and workflow support it; MIDI is better suited to playback and sequencing.
