Convert BBB to CSV

A spreadsheet, CRM, or contact-import service may require CSV when data must be moved out of an old BlackBerry backup. Converting the backup requires extracting a specific database first; renaming .bbb to .csv does not change its format.

What the BBB format is

In the mobile-platform context, .bbb is a proprietary BlackBerry backup container produced by BlackBerry Desktop Software and, for some BlackBerry devices, BlackBerry Link. It can contain separate databases for contacts, calendar entries, memos, tasks, SMS messages, call history, and device settings.

The file is usually stored in the backup directory or in a location selected during backup. A backup can be password-protected or encrypted. It is not a text table, so Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and text editors cannot interpret it correctly.

What the CSV format is

CSV is a plain-text tabular format. Each record normally occupies one line, and fields are separated by commas; fields containing commas, quotation marks, or line breaks must be quoted. CSV is supported by spreadsheets, CRMs, databases, scripts, and many contact-import services.

CSV is suitable for filtering, deduplication, editing, and transferring one database at a time. It cannot preserve the complete BlackBerry backup structure, device settings, attachments, message relationships, permissions, or all application-specific fields.

How to extract CSV from a BBB file

1. Make a working copy of the .bbb file and preserve the original. Do not rename the copy or open it with a generic archive utility.
2. Install a reputable BBB extraction utility such as Reincubate BlackBerry Backup Extractor. Check its current operating-system and BlackBerry-version support before purchase or installation; support for legacy backups varies.
3. Open the copied backup in the extractor and enter the backup password if requested. Let the program scan the databases it can recognize.
4. Select the required database, such as Contacts, Calendar, SMS, Call Logs, Memos, or Tasks. Use the program's export command and choose .csv when that format is available. Some databases may instead require an intermediate format such as .vcf, .xml, or .html.
5. Open the exported file in LibreOffice Calc or Excel through the import dialog. Select UTF-8 encoding and comma as the delimiter when prompted. Import phone numbers, PINs, postal codes, and other identifier fields as text to prevent truncation or automatic date conversion.
6. Check column names, record counts, dates, non-ASCII characters, quoted fields, and multiline messages. Save the checked result as a new file and keep it separate from the original backup.

Fallback through BlackBerry software

If an extractor cannot read the backup, an older compatible installation of BlackBerry Desktop Software may restore it to a spare BlackBerry device. Create a separate device profile where possible; restoring a backup can overwrite data on the target device. Synchronize the required contacts or calendar records with a compatible address-book application such as Microsoft Outlook, then use File → Open & Export → Import/Export → Export to a file → Comma Separated Values in Outlook.

For contacts, restore or export to .vcf when available, import the vCard file into Outlook, Apple Contacts, or another address-book application, and export the contacts as CSV. This fallback can omit fields or alter dates, categories, and duplicate records during synchronization, so compare the result with the device data.

Compatibility and data limits

There is no universal BBB-to-CSV schema. Contacts, calendar items, messages, and call logs use different columns, so a converter normally creates a separate CSV for each database rather than one complete backup file.

Password-protected or encrypted backups require the original password. An unsupported BlackBerry OS version, damaged container, unrecognized database, or proprietary application data can produce a partial export. Deleted records are generally unavailable through a normal backup extraction.

CSV export can change formatting even when the records are recovered correctly. Spreadsheet software may remove leading zeroes, convert dates, round long numbers, or display line breaks differently. Validate the output in the application that will import it before deleting the source data.

No reputable general-purpose online service reliably parses private BlackBerry BBB containers into CSV. Because backups may contain contacts, messages, and call history, use desktop extraction rather than uploading the file to an unknown website. Online CSV tools are appropriate only for non-sensitive validation or cleanup after extraction.
