Older Samsung Kies backups may be the only copy of contacts from a discontinued phone, while newer software usually accepts CSV or vCard instead. Converting the contacts makes them editable in spreadsheets, importable into CRM or email systems, and easier to archive.
What the SPBA format is
.spba is a proprietary Samsung Phonebook Archive associated with older Samsung phones and legacy Samsung Kies installations. It stores contacts in a binary backup container, not as rows of readable text, so changing the filename extension does not convert it.
SPBA files are typically found in Kies backup folders created for feature phones and older Galaxy models. The exact contact fields and restoration behavior can vary by handset and Kies release. Kies is discontinued, and current Samsung Smart Switch software generally does not replace its ability to open old SPBA archives.
What the CSV format is
CSV is plain text containing tabular records, normally with one contact per row and fields such as name, telephone number, email address, organization, and notes separated by commas, semicolons, or tabs. Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets, CRM systems, databases, and many email services can import it.
CSV is convenient for editing and migration, but it has no universal contact schema. A target application may expect a particular header row, delimiter, character encoding, or phone-number column. Multiple numbers, labels, groups, photos, birthdays, and multiline notes can be changed or omitted during export.
Convert the archive with Samsung Kies
- Copy the original
.spbafile to a separate folder and work from the copy. Do not edit or rename the original. - Install the legacy Kies release associated with the phone and backup. Kies 2.6 is commonly used with older devices, but the correct release depends on the handset and backup. Obtain an installer from Samsung or a reputable software archive; avoid modified installers.
- Open Kies and use its backup restore or contact-import function to load the phonebook. Menu names differ between releases; look under File, Tools, the connected-device view, or the Contacts section for Restore, Import, or Export.
- If Kies recognizes the archive, restore or import the contacts into its contact manager. An original phone or compatible Samsung USB driver may be required, although some Kies releases can restore contacts without the handset connected.
- Use the Contacts section's export command. Choose CSV if the installed version provides it, then select the destination and, where offered, UTF-8 encoding and the required delimiter.
- If Kies offers only vCard (
.vcf) or Outlook export, use one of those formats as an intermediate step. vCard usually preserves contact fields better than a direct spreadsheet export.
Kies menu availability is version-dependent; there is no single export path that works for every SPBA backup. If Kies does not recognize the file, try the major Kies version used to create it, the required Samsung USB driver, and the original phone model. A current operating system may require an older Windows installation or a controlled virtual machine.
Convert a vCard export locally
- Install Mozilla Thunderbird and open its address book.
- Choose Address Book → Import and select the
.vcffile exported by Kies. - Review the imported records, then select the contacts and use Tools → Export. Choose CSV and save the file.
- Open the CSV in LibreOffice Calc or Excel using the import dialog rather than double-clicking it. Select UTF-8 and the delimiter used by the export, then check names, international numbers, email addresses, and multiline notes.
Thunderbird may map repeated telephone numbers, custom fields, contact groups, photos, and notes differently from Kies. Compare the number of records and several representative contacts with the original backup before deleting any source files.
Use an online address-book service
There is no dependable online converter that can interpret an SPBA file by filename alone. After Kies exports vCard, Google Contacts can provide an online conversion path: open Google Contacts, choose Import, upload the .vcf file, select the imported contacts, choose Export, and select Google CSV or Outlook CSV. The resulting CSV variants use different columns, so choose the one required by the destination system.
This option uploads personal contact data to a third party. Use the local Thunderbird method for confidential contacts, and use another online service only when its current documentation explicitly lists vCard input and CSV output. Do not upload the original SPBA archive to a generic extension-conversion website.
Check compatibility before importing
Open the exported file in a text editor or spreadsheet and verify that it contains a header row, one logical record per contact, quoted fields where required, and the expected delimiter. If every field appears in one spreadsheet column, reopen it with the correct delimiter instead of saving over the file.
Choose UTF-8 when available to preserve accented names and non-Latin scripts. Test the CSV in the destination application with a small copy first; some applications require headers such as First Name, Last Name, Phone 1 - Value, or their own localized equivalents.
