Convert NBF to CSV

People usually need this conversion to move contacts from an older Nokia phone backup into spreadsheet software, another contact manager, or an import service that accepts CSV. An NBF file normally has to be opened or restored first because it is a backup container, not a ready-made CSV table.

What the NBF format is

NBF commonly identifies an older Nokia Backup File created by Nokia PC Suite or Nokia Suite, although the extension is also used by unrelated backup applications. Depending on the Nokia model and backup settings, it may contain contacts, calendar entries, messages, media, settings, and other phone data.

NBF is a proprietary backup format, and different Nokia software releases did not necessarily produce compatible files. Confirm that the file came from Nokia software before using the procedures below, and keep an untouched copy of the original.

What the CSV format is

CSV is a plain-text table format in which each line represents a record and fields are separated by commas or another delimiter. Spreadsheet programs, databases, email clients, contact managers, and web services commonly import it.

CSV works well for contact fields such as names, telephone numbers, email addresses, companies, and notes. It cannot preserve the complete structure of an NBF backup; messages, calendars, photos, ringtones, application data, and phone settings require separate exports or restoration.

How to convert the contacts

The reliable workflow is NBF backup → contacts or vCards → CSV. There is no universal converter that can interpret every Nokia NBF variant.

1. Make a working copy of backup.nbf. Do not experiment on the only copy.
2. Try a Nokia tool that matches the phone and backup generation. Nokia PC Suite or Nokia Suite may restore the contacts to a compatible phone, or synchronize them with Outlook if that feature is available in the installed release. Menu names vary; look under Tools → Options → Contacts and the backup or restore function.
3. If the contacts are synchronized to classic Microsoft Outlook, export them with File → Open & Export → Import/Export → Export to a file → Comma Separated Values. Select the contacts folder and save it as contacts.csv.
4. Open the resulting file through the spreadsheet program's import command rather than double-clicking it when possible. Select UTF-8 encoding and the delimiter used by the destination system, then check names, numbers, email addresses, and duplicate records.

Restoration may require the original Nokia phone, a compatible driver, or an older Windows environment. Nokia PC Suite and Nokia Suite are discontinued, so obtain them only from a trustworthy archive or an existing installation and do not install unofficial modified packages.

Extract contacts without restoring the phone

Some NBF files are archive-like. On a copy, inspect the file with 7-Zip using 7z l backup.nbf. If it lists contents, extract them with 7z x backup.nbf -oextracted and look for .vcf vCard files. Renaming .nbf to .zip does not perform a conversion.

Import extracted vCards into Outlook, Apple Contacts, Thunderbird with a suitable contacts extension, or another contact manager that can export CSV. Some builds of Nokia NBU Explorer and similar Nokia-backup utilities support only specific backup extensions or generations; use one whose documentation explicitly lists the file as NBF, and verify the extracted records before deleting anything.

If 7-Zip cannot read the file and Nokia software cannot restore it, a specialist Nokia-backup recovery utility may be the only option. Check compatibility with the exact phone model and PC Suite version before paying for it. Generic online converters generally do not parse proprietary NBF files.

Online conversion and privacy

Do not upload an intact NBF backup to a general conversion website: it may contain contacts, messages, photos, and other private data, and most online services do not support Nokia NBF. After extracting contacts to vCard, an online VCF-to-CSV service such as CloudConvert may be usable if its current format list supports VCF and the data is not sensitive; an offline contact manager is safer.

Compatibility and data-loss limits

• Multiple telephone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, groups, custom fields, and linked contacts may be flattened into separate columns or combined fields during CSV export.
• Use UTF-8 to preserve accented and non-Latin names. If characters appear corrupted in Excel, import the file through its data-import dialog and select UTF-8 explicitly.
• CSV has no universal delimiter or type system. Regional settings may produce semicolon-delimited output, and spreadsheet programs may reinterpret phone numbers, leading zeros, dates, or long numeric strings.
• Export SMS, calendars, media, and settings separately if the destination application supports them; a contact CSV cannot preserve those NBF records.
