A phone, ringtone editor, or music application may require MIDI instead of an RTTTL ringtone description for playback, sequencing, or editing. Converting it preserves the written melody in a format supported by DAWs, notation software, synthesizers, and MIDI hardware.

What the RTTTL format is

RTTTL, or Ring Tone Text Transfer Language, is a plain-text format created for mobile-phone ringtones. A typical file contains a name, default duration, default octave, tempo, and a monophonic sequence of notes, for example tone:d=4,o=5,b=140:c,e,g.

Nokia ringtone composers, ringtone repositories, text editors, and embedded projects for phones or microcontrollers commonly create or contain RTTTL data. You may encounter it as an .rtttl file, a .txt file, or a text string inside source code. Note values include rests, sharps, octave numbers, dotted durations, and tempo; RTTTL normally describes only one melodic line.

What the MIDI format is

MIDI is an event-based music format rather than recorded audio. A Standard MIDI File, normally ending in .mid or .midi, stores note-on and note-off events, timing, tempo, channels, program changes, and other performance data.

MIDI is useful for editing the converted melody in a DAW, notation program, sequencer, or hardware synthesizer. It is usually much smaller than an audio recording, and its notes can be transposed, quantized, assigned to different instruments, or rendered through different synthesizers. The sound is not fixed by the file: the receiving application or device supplies the instrument sounds.

How to convert RTTTL to MIDI

  1. Check that the source contains RTTTL text rather than an audio recording. If it opens as readable text beginning with a ringtone name and colon, it is suitable. Rename an incorrectly labelled text file to .rtttl only if its contents use RTTTL syntax.
  2. Open the RTTTL-to-MIDI converter on 101convert.com. The service converts the file online for free and does not require software installation.
  3. Upload or select the .rtttl or compatible .txt file, choose MIDI as the output format, and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting .mid file. Open it in a DAW or sequencer with File → Import, or play it with a MIDI-compatible media player or hardware device.
  5. If the destination expects a specific MIDI type, save or export the imported sequence in that application as a Standard MIDI File. Most applications accept the converter’s standard .mid output directly.

Quality and compatibility limits

RTTTL contains limited musical information, so the conversion cannot recreate expressive audio. It generally provides a single MIDI melody with note pitches, rests, durations, and tempo; velocity, articulation, effects, lyrics, and the original ringtone timbre are normally absent.

Playback can sound different on every device because MIDI instruments come from the computer’s synthesizer, sound bank, or connected hardware. Assign a General MIDI program such as piano after import if the converter does not add an instrument assignment.

Very short ringtone notes may be rounded to the MIDI file’s timing resolution. If the rhythm sounds uneven, set the project tempo to the RTTTL b= value before editing, then adjust quantization only when necessary. RTTTL is usually monophonic; chords or overlapping notes require manual MIDI editing after conversion.
