How to convert png to cbz file

  • Ebooks

Comic and manga readers may require a CBZ archive rather than a folder of separate PNG pages. Packaging the pages as CBZ creates one file that is easier to copy, archive, share, and open in compatible comic-reading software.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster image format used for scanned comic pages, manga artwork, illustrations, screenshots, and web graphics. It uses lossless compression and supports transparency, grayscale, and multiple color depths.

Scanners, screenshot tools, image editors, and drawing applications such as Krita, GIMP, Photoshop, and Clip Studio Paint commonly create PNG files. A page set might contain files such as page001.png, page002.png, and page003.png.

What the CBZ format is

CBZ is a comic-book archive convention based on the ZIP format. A CBZ file contains the page images, usually directly at the archive root, and uses the .cbz extension instead of .zip. Comic readers normally display the images in filename order and provide navigation, zooming, and sometimes two-page viewing.

CBZ keeps a complete comic in one file without converting the image pixels or imposing a PDF-style page layout. It is supported by many desktop, mobile, and dedicated comic-reading applications. CBZ has no universal metadata or page-layout standard, so reader behavior can vary.

How to create a CBZ archive

  1. Put all page PNG files in one folder and remove unrelated images, thumbnails, text files, and hidden system files.
  2. Rename pages with consistent, fixed-width numbering, such as 001.png, 002.png, and 010.png. Add a cover such as 000-cover.png if it must appear first. Fixed-width names prevent alphabetical sorting from placing page 10 before page 2.
  3. Select the PNG files, not the containing folder. In 7-Zip, use 7-Zip → Add to archive, set the archive format to zip, and create the archive. Windows, macOS, and Linux archive utilities can perform the same operation.
  4. Rename the resulting file from comic.zip to comic.cbz. If file extensions are hidden in Windows, enable File Explorer → View → Show → File name extensions first; otherwise, you might create comic.cbz.zip.
  5. Open the CBZ in the target reader and verify the cover, page order, orientation, and final pages.

For a command-line conversion on Linux or macOS, run the following from the page directory after confirming that filenames sort correctly:

zip -X comic.cbz 001.png 002.png 003.png

To include every PNG in an already correctly named directory, use zip -X comic.cbz ./*.png. On Windows PowerShell, create a ZIP and change its extension with:

Compress-Archive -Path .\*.png -DestinationPath comic.zip
Rename-Item comic.zip comic.cbz

For a no-install option, use the free PNG-to-CBZ converter on 101convert.com, upload the page images supported by its interface, select CBZ, and download the generated archive. Check the resulting order and contents in a comic reader.

Quality and compatibility limits

Archiving PNG files in ZIP normally preserves every pixel because PNG is already lossless. ZIP may reduce the total size slightly, but it does not resize images, change their color depth, or remove PNG metadata. A CBZ made from high-resolution scans can remain very large.

To reduce size, resize pages or convert them to JPEG before archiving; JPEG uses lossy compression and can introduce blocking, ringing, or blurred text. Keep the original PNG files if lossless quality or later editing matters.

Use consistent page dimensions and orientation when possible. Avoid duplicate filenames, inconsistent numbering, and unnecessary punctuation. Most comic readers support PNG and JPEG, but some have limitations with transparency, unusually high color depths, very large images, or nested directories. Keeping page images directly in the archive root gives the broadest compatibility.

Inspect the CBZ with a ZIP utility if a reader cannot open it. Confirm that it is a valid ZIP archive, that it contains image files rather than another archive or a folder containing the pages, and that the filenames sort in the intended reading order. Renaming a ZIP to CBZ does not repair a damaged archive or convert unsupported image data.
