Why convert PIC to NEF?

Converting a PIC file to NEF is uncommon, as NEF is a raw camera format. However, if you need to use a PIC image in a workflow that requires NEF files, you may want to convert it for compatibility or archival purposes. Note that converting a standard image to NEF will not restore raw sensor data, but simply wrap the image in a NEF container.

How to convert PIC to NEF

Direct conversion from PIC to NEF is not natively supported by most software, as NEF is designed for raw camera data. However, you can use a two-step process:

1. Convert the PIC file to a common format like TIFF or JPEG using an image editor such as IrfanView or XnView.
2. Use a raw image editor like Adobe Photoshop or RawTherapee to import the TIFF/JPEG and export it as a NEF file. Note that this will not create a true raw file, but some tools allow saving in NEF format for compatibility.

Recommended software for conversion

• IrfanView: Open the PIC file, then use File → Save As to export to TIFF or JPEG.
• Adobe Photoshop: Open the converted TIFF/JPEG, then use File → Export → Save for Web or compatible plugins to save as NEF (if available).
• RawTherapee: Import the TIFF/JPEG and export as NEF if the option is supported.

For most users, IrfanView is the best choice for the initial conversion, while Adobe Photoshop or RawTherapee can handle the NEF export if needed.

Important considerations

• Converting to NEF does not recreate original raw data; it only changes the file container.
