Convert IDML to INDD

Some production systems and collaborators require Adobe InDesign’s native .indd format for editing, preflight, or delivery. Opening an .idml file in InDesign and saving it as INDD creates that editable working document while preserving the layout structure as far as the available fonts, links, and InDesign version allow.

What the IDML format is

IDML means InDesign Markup Language. It is an XML-based interchange format distributed as a ZIP package with an .idml extension. The package contains XML and related resources describing pages, stories, styles, links, spreads, and document settings.

InDesign exports IDML through File → Export; InDesign Server and publishing-automation systems can also generate it. Designers, publishers, developers, and production teams use IDML to exchange documents between InDesign versions, inspect or repair document structure, and generate layouts through automation. It is not InDesign’s normal native working format.

What the INDD format is

INDD is Adobe InDesign’s native document format. It is intended for continued editing in desktop InDesign, including text and layout changes, preflight, packaging, and PDF production. Unlike IDML, INDD is a proprietary native document rather than an XML interchange package.

The resulting INDD file still depends on external fonts and linked graphics unless those assets are embedded or collected with File → Package. Saving as INDD does not automatically include those external resources.

How to convert IDML to INDD

1. Install a compatible desktop version of Adobe InDesign. It is the reliable conversion tool because Adobe controls the native INDD format.
2. Make a backup of the .idml file and collect the fonts and linked graphics used by the document if they are available.
3. In InDesign, choose File → Open, select the IDML file, and let InDesign reconstruct the document.
4. Inspect the result for missing fonts and links, overset text, changed page or spread settings, substituted colors, and warnings in the Preflight panel.
5. Choose File → Save As, select InDesign Document, and save a new file with an .indd extension, such as project.indd.
6. Close and reopen the new INDD file, then check critical pages again. Use File → Package when handing the document to another InDesign user so the package can include the document, links, fonts where licensing permits, and a report.

For repeated conversions, InDesign Server or an approved InDesign scripting workflow can open IDML files and save INDD copies. A general command-line or desktop file converter cannot reliably create a native INDD document.

Compatibility and limitations

This is a document reconstruction, not a raster or PDF conversion, so text, frames, styles, and other editable objects generally remain editable. The result is not guaranteed to match the source in every InDesign release.

IDML is commonly used to move content to an earlier InDesign version, but opening a document in an older release can change or discard features that release does not support. Missing fonts can alter text metrics and cause reflow or overset text. Missing or changed linked graphics, plug-ins, scripts, transparency effects, color settings, and damaged IDML packages can also produce differences.

There is no broadly reputable online service that reliably converts IDML into native INDD. Online services may offer related outputs such as PDF, but PDF is not an editable INDD replacement and may flatten or alter document features. Because an IDML package can contain proprietary layouts and text, use local InDesign rather than uploading confidential files to an unverified converter.
