Convert IDML to EPS

Legacy prepress, sign-production, and illustration applications may require EPS instead of an editable InDesign package. Converting the layout gives those systems a print-oriented file, but it removes InDesign’s document structure and editing features.

What the IDML format is

IDML, or InDesign Markup Language, is an XML-based interchange format for Adobe InDesign layouts. An .idml file is a ZIP-based package containing XML for page geometry, text, styles, objects, and document settings; linked images and fonts may remain external rather than being embedded.

InDesign creates IDML through File → Export when IDML is selected. Designers use it to exchange layouts between InDesign versions, recover documents, and provide an alternative to the native .indd format. IDML is not a rendered image and cannot be converted correctly by treating it as a generic graphic file.

What the EPS format is

EPS, or Encapsulated PostScript, is a legacy page-description format used by older prepress, typesetting, illustration, and sign-production software. It can contain vector paths, text, placed raster images, clipping paths, and PostScript instructions.

EPS preserves vector geometry independently of output resolution and can be placed in applications such as Adobe Illustrator and some cutting or printing systems. It normally represents one page or artwork instance; it does not preserve InDesign’s page structure, styles, links, interactive features, live layout behavior, or reliable editability.

How to convert IDML to EPS

Adobe InDesign is the dependable conversion tool because it interprets the IDML layout, fonts, linked content, color settings, and page geometry before generating PostScript.

1. Install the document’s fonts and make its linked images available. Missing fonts or links can alter text flow, image placement, and output quality.
2. Open document.idml in InDesign with File → Open. Resolve missing-resource and compatibility warnings before exporting.
3. Save a native working copy with File → Save As, using document.indd. Keep the original IDML unchanged.
4. Choose File → Export, select EPS as the format, choose the destination, and select Save.
5. In the EPS export dialog, select the required page or page range. Because EPS is generally single-page, exporting several pages usually creates a separate EPS file for each page. Select Spreads only when facing pages must be exported as one combined spread.
6. Set the resolution, color and ink options, image-data handling, font downloading, and transparency flattener to the receiving workflow’s specifications, then select Export.

Open the resulting .eps file in the target application or a PostScript-aware viewer. Check every exported page, especially documents containing placed graphics, spot colors, overprints, clipping paths, or small type.

Quality and compatibility limits

EPS has limited support for modern transparency, blending modes, gradients, live effects, and color-management features. InDesign may flatten transparency, rasterize unsupported effects, substitute fonts, or transform placed content according to the selected export settings.

EPS also cannot reconstruct the original InDesign layout. Retain both the original .idml and the repaired or edited .indd file for future changes, along with fonts and linked assets where licensing permits.

Generic browser converters are usually unsuitable for this conversion: many reject IDML, do not implement InDesign’s layout engine, or produce flattened output with missing fonts and altered page geometry. Use an online service only when its current specifications explicitly list *.idml input and EPS output, the file is nonconfidential, and the result passes visual and prepress checks. For production work, use desktop InDesign.
