Convert IDML to INX

An older InDesign installation may accept an .inx file but not a current InDesign document or its .idml interchange file. Converting through InDesign CS4 can make the layout editable in InDesign CS3, which is the usual reason to perform this conversion.

What the IDML format is

IDML means InDesign Markup Language. It is Adobe InDesign’s XML-based interchange format, introduced with InDesign CS4 and still used by newer releases to exchange documents across versions or recover document content.

An .idml file is a ZIP-based package containing XML files for stories, pages, spreads, styles, resources, and document settings. It is not a normal InDesign document format such as .indd; opening it causes InDesign to reconstruct an editable document. IDML is commonly used when a newer InDesign release must pass a layout to an older installation, a production system needs structured InDesign data, or a damaged document must be recovered.

Current InDesign versions create IDML with File → Export. The exact features represented in IDML vary by InDesign version, so an older release may ignore or simplify newer document features.

What the INX format is

INX means InDesign Interchange. It is an older XML-based interchange format used to move editable documents between InDesign releases. InDesign CS4 can export an INX file intended for InDesign CS3; earlier InDesign versions can then open it when the document features are compatible.

INX can retain text, frames, pages, styles, and placed-content references more effectively than PDF because it describes an editable InDesign layout rather than a fixed visual output. It is a legacy format, not the normal interchange choice in current Creative Cloud workflows, and it should be produced only when the receiving application specifically requires .inx.

How to convert IDML to INX

1. Install InDesign CS4 on a supported system, or use an existing licensed CS4 workstation or virtual machine. CS4 is the practical bridge because it opens IDML and provides the older InDesign Interchange export.
2. In CS4, choose File → Open and select the source .idml. If the file is hidden, change the dialog’s file filter to show supported files or all files.
3. Let CS4 rebuild the document. Record missing-font, missing-link, and compatibility warnings. Install permitted fonts and make linked assets available before exporting when layout fidelity matters.
4. Choose File → Export. Select InDesign Interchange or InDesign CS3 Interchange, depending on the wording in that CS4 installation, and save the result with an .inx extension.
5. Open the INX file in the target InDesign version, preferably as a test copy. Check page count, text reflow, overset text, tables, master pages, styles, transparency, hyperlinks, placed graphics, colors, and preflight results.

Do not rename .idml to .inx. IDML is a ZIP package with a different internal structure, and changing only the extension does not convert it.

No general-purpose browser converter is a reliable substitute for InDesign CS4. Generic XML or document converters do not understand InDesign’s layout model, and uploading production documents to an unverified service creates confidentiality and asset-handling risks. If CS4 is unavailable, use a licensed CS4 installation or ask a service provider that can run the correct InDesign version; Adobe’s current InDesign releases do not generally provide the legacy INX export workflow.

Compatibility and quality limits

Conversion is not lossless. CS4 may discard, rewrite, or approximate effects, object properties, document settings, typography controls, scripting data, and other features introduced after CS4. An IDML exported by a much newer release may fail to open in CS4 or may open with additional simplification.

Missing fonts can change line breaks and cause overset text; missing or relinked graphics can change appearance; and older InDesign versions may recompose text or handle transparency differently. Keep the original IDML, the exported INX, all linked assets, and fonts that may legally be transferred. Export a PDF from the source document as a visual reference, but verify the converted INX in the actual target InDesign version before production.
