Convert QXD to INDD

A recipient or production workflow may require an editable Adobe InDesign document instead of a legacy QuarkXPress file. Converting the layout to .indd makes it available for further InDesign editing, packaging, and output.

What the QXD format is

.qxd is a legacy QuarkXPress project format used for brochures, magazines, books, newsletters, advertisements, and other page layouts. A QXD file can contain text frames, images, style definitions, colors, master pages, page geometry, and layout settings; it is not a flattened image or a generic text document. Newer QuarkXPress releases generally use .qxp, and the exact QXD generation determines which software can open the file.

What the INDD format is

.indd is Adobe InDesign’s native document format for editable print and digital publishing layouts. It supports InDesign page and parent-page structures, text and object styles, linked graphics, tables, layers, interactive objects, preflight settings, and other native layout features. The file does not itself contain a complete delivery package: fonts and linked graphics normally remain external and should be collected with File → Package.

How to convert QXD to INDD

The most reliable workflow is QuarkXPress to IDML to InDesign. IDML is Adobe’s interchange format; InDesign opens it and creates a new editable document that can then be saved as INDD.

1. Make a backup of the original QXD file and identify its QuarkXPress version if possible.
2. Open the file in a QuarkXPress release that supports that legacy format. Very old QXD files may require an older QuarkXPress installation or an intermediate conversion before a current release can read them.
3. Check fonts, linked graphics, page size, bleeds, colors, layers, and text flow in QuarkXPress. Resolve missing resources before exporting.
4. Use QuarkXPress’s IDML export command, commonly File → Export → Layout as IDML. Menu wording and IDML support vary by release. Save the resulting .idml file separately from the QXD source.
5. In Adobe InDesign, choose File → Open and select the IDML file. InDesign converts the interchange file into a new document.
6. Inspect the converted pages, then use File → Save As to create the .indd file. Use File → Package when delivering the document with its linked graphics and fonts.

Options when QuarkXPress is unavailable

Markzware IDMarkz can open supported QuarkXPress documents and export them as IDML for use in InDesign. Check its current QXD-version support before purchasing or processing an irreplaceable file. The paid Q2ID InDesign plug-in can import some QuarkXPress documents directly, but compatibility depends on the QXD generation and the installed InDesign version; it should be tested on a copy first.

No reputable browser service reliably converts complex QXD layouts into fully editable INDD files. Services such as Zamzar or CloudConvert may support selected document or PDF outputs when their current format lists allow it, but a PDF is an output document, not an editable InDesign conversion. Uploading confidential publishing files to an online service also creates a data-handling concern.

Quality and compatibility limitations

IDML conversion is a structural translation, not a byte-for-byte format change. Text can reflow because of different fonts, font metrics, hyphenation, justification, and line-composition rules. Check overset text, line breaks, tables, footnotes, style mappings, anchored objects, clipping paths, transparency, blends, layered graphics, spot colors, parent pages, page numbering, and bleed settings on every page.

Linked images may need relinking, and conversion does not embed fonts. Install the exact fonts used by the source or replace them deliberately, then inspect all substitutions. Run InDesign preflight, export a proof PDF, and compare it with the original QuarkXPress output before printing. Saving in a newer InDesign release can prevent older InDesign versions from opening the INDD; create an appropriate IDML copy when backward compatibility is required.
