Convert DFT to DXF
Convert Solid Edge DFT drawings to editable DXF files with correct units and verified geometry.
Make DXF files online
We can't read DFT files yet, so this conversion isn't available. If you can export your work to one of these formats - or others - we'll turn it into DXF:

A recipient may require .dxf for AutoCAD, CAM, CNC, laser-cutting, or drafting software that cannot open Solid Edge drawings. Converting the file makes its 2D drawing data editable and shareable outside the Solid Edge environment.
What the DFT format is
.dft is the proprietary Draft document format used by Siemens Solid Edge. It can contain drawing sheets, projected views, dimensions, annotations, layers, title blocks, line styles, and links to Solid Edge part or assembly files. A DFT may therefore depend on associated model files for updating or rebuilding drawing views; the drawing may open without those files, but linked views can be incomplete or unavailable for update.
What the DXF format is
.dxf is Autodesk's Drawing Exchange Format. AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, QCAD, LibreCAD, CAM systems, and many laser, plasma, and CNC applications can import it. DXF is useful for exchanging editable 2D entities such as lines, arcs, circles, polylines, text, hatches, dimensions, and layers, but it does not preserve every Solid Edge drafting feature, model link, parametric relationship, or revision-management property.
How to convert the file in Solid Edge
Solid Edge is the preferred converter because it can interpret the native DFT structure before exporting the drawing.
- Install a Solid Edge edition that supports the DFT version and features used by the file. Solid Edge 2D Drafting may open some DFT files, while a full Solid Edge installation is more suitable for newer, model-linked, or feature-rich drawings.
- Open the
.dftfile and, if prompted, resolve missing part or assembly references. - Check the required sheets, view visibility, drawing scale, units, layers, line styles, fonts, title blocks, and sheet size. Suppressed or hidden views may not appear in the export.
- Use File → Save As or the equivalent application-menu command.
- Choose the AutoCAD DXF file type, such as
AutoCAD Drawing Exchange (*.dxf), enter an output filename, and save. - In the DXF export options, select the required DXF release, units, sheet or geometry scope, and text, font, hatch, and dimension handling. The exact options vary by Solid Edge release.
- Open the result in the recipient's application and verify dimensions, coordinates, units, layers, text, and every required sheet. Measure a known feature instead of relying only on its visual size.
For recurring jobs, use Solid Edge automation or batch facilities only after testing the export configuration on representative drawings. Save a copy of the original DFT and retain the export settings with the delivered DXF.
Online and alternative conversion options
Most general online converters do not provide dependable native Solid Edge DFT support. Services that accept common CAD formats such as DWG, DXF, STEP, or IGES should not be assumed to read DFT. Use a web converter only when its current documentation explicitly lists Solid Edge .dft input and identifies the resulting DXF version and supported entities.
Uploading engineering drawings to a third-party service can expose confidential geometry, dimensions, customer data, or intellectual property. For sensitive files, use Solid Edge locally. DraftSight, BricsCAD, QCAD, and LibreCAD are useful for checking or editing the exported DXF, but they are not reliable direct DFT converters.
Quality and compatibility limits
- A normal DFT-to-DXF export produces 2D drawing data, not the referenced 3D part or assembly as a native solid. Export the source model separately to STEP, IGES, SAT, or another format required by the receiving system.
- Model links, associativity, constraints, feature intelligence, revision data, and Solid Edge-specific annotations may be discarded or converted into ordinary DXF entities.
- Dimensions may lose associativity, change appearance, or be exported as lines and text. Verify critical measurements in the DXF and do not treat displayed dimension text as proof that geometry is correct.
- Multi-sheet documents may export only the active sheet or produce separate DXF files, depending on the Solid Edge version and export settings. Confirm that every required sheet was delivered.
- Set units explicitly and check insertion scale in the receiving application. A file can look correct while its coordinates are wrong because millimeters and inches were interpreted differently.
- Fonts, hatches, line weights, proxy objects, and non-Latin characters can render differently. Convert critical text to outlines only when required by the downstream workflow; outlined text is no longer convenient to edit or search.
- Select the oldest DXF release supported by the recipient when compatibility is uncertain. Older releases can improve interoperability but may omit newer entity types or export features.

Frequently asked questions
Will my Solid Edge DFT drawing stay editable after converting to DXF?
The exported drawing geometry remains editable as DXF entities, but Solid Edge-specific parametric links, model associativity, and some drafting intelligence are usually lost. The DXF should be treated as independent 2D geometry rather than a fully equivalent DFT document.
Will the units and scale stay correct when converting DFT to DXF?
They can stay correct if the source units are interpreted and written correctly during conversion. A common problem is geometry opening at the wrong scale because the DFT unit system and the DXF unit setting do not match, so verify a known dimension afterward.
Are DFT dimensions, text, and fonts preserved in DXF?
Basic dimensions, text, and linework may transfer, but formatting, annotation behavior, symbols, and fonts can change. Missing fonts or unsupported drafting elements may cause text to shift, display differently, or be converted into less editable geometry.
What can be lost when converting a Solid Edge DFT file to DXF?
Links to the 3D model, sheet and view relationships, hidden drafting data, and some Solid Edge-specific annotations can be lost or flattened. The resulting DXF generally preserves exportable 2D geometry, but it may not reproduce every sheet or view exactly.
