You can save Windows themes also as .theme files. These use, however, a plain text format and will not include graphics, sounds, and other theme files. Windows 7 introduced the .themepack file format to allow users to share their themes.
These Windows 7 .themepack files can be imported by Windows 8 and Windows 10. This can be done in the 'Windows Settings' - 'Themes'. Windows 8 saves themes in a format using the .deskthemepack extension. There is, however, no backward compatibility with Windows 7.
- Double click the .themepack file
- Windows 8 will adapt your Windows 7 theme
If you wish to generate a .deskthemepack file, save your current theme in the 'Control Panel' under 'Individual Settings'.
