Convert TAX2018 to PDF

A tax preparer may need a readable copy of a 2018 return for printing, sharing with an accountant, submission to an agency that accepts paper or PDF files, or long-term records. TurboTax must normally create the PDF because generic converters cannot interpret TAX2018 data.

What the TAX2018 format is

.tax2018 is TurboTax Desktop's proprietary file format for U.S. federal and state tax returns for the 2018 tax year. It stores structured return data such as taxpayer details, interview answers, calculations, and selected forms; it is not a set of printable pages.

TurboTax Desktop for tax year 2018, on Windows or macOS, is the appropriate application for opening the file. A current TurboTax edition may not open a return from 2018, and TurboTax Online does not generally open local .tax2018 files. Do not rename the extension, edit the file in a text editor, or upload it to a generic converter.

What the PDF format is

PDF preserves a print-ready representation of the return across operating systems and devices. It is suitable for review, printing, sharing, and retaining a fixed filing record without distributing the editable TurboTax data.

A PDF export may contain only the forms selected for printing, or it may include the filing copy, worksheets, calculations, and state forms. Worksheets can contain sensitive information and may be marked Do not file; a PDF is not automatically a valid electronic tax filing or a substitute for e-filing when an authority requires electronic submission.

How to convert TAX2018 to PDF

1. Make a backup copy of the original .tax2018 file. Keep it unchanged because the PDF will not preserve TurboTax's editable interview structure.
2. Install and open the official TurboTax Desktop 2018 application that matches the file's tax year. If the old installer is unavailable, check Intuit's official prior-year support or download pages, or ask the preparer who created the return to produce the PDF. Avoid unofficial installers.
3. Choose File → Open Tax Return and select the .tax2018 file. If the return is password-protected, enter its password. Do not update or alter the return unless that is required.
4. Choose File → Print. Select the filing copy, client copy, or all forms and worksheets. Include the relevant state return and schedules; choose the shortest filing set only when a recipient specifically requests it.
5. In the operating system's print dialog, select Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows, or choose PDF → Save as PDF on macOS. Set the destination and save the output with a .pdf filename.
6. Open the PDF and check page count, legibility, page order, state forms, schedules, signature areas, and any pages required by the recipient. Preserve the original TAX2018 file separately.

Online converters and compatibility limits

There is generally no reputable generic online service that converts proprietary TAX2018 data directly to PDF. Services such as Adobe Acrobat online tools and other PDF converters can manipulate an existing PDF, but they cannot reliably interpret a TurboTax return. Uploading a tax file to an unverified service also exposes names, addresses, Social Security numbers, income, and bank information.

If TurboTax cannot open the file, confirm that it is the complete original file rather than a backup fragment, and use the matching 2018 desktop edition. If the return opens but the output is incomplete, change the TurboTax print selection instead of converting the file again. Before transmitting the PDF, use encrypted delivery or a password-protected PDF when supported, and verify whether the recipient needs a filing copy or the more detailed worksheets.
