Convert SDR to XLSX

People usually need spreadsheet data from a SmartDraw diagram when labels, schedules, inventories, or org-chart records must be edited, calculated, or supplied to a system that accepts Excel workbooks. An SDR drawing itself is not a spreadsheet, so the practical result is usually an export of its source data or a manually extracted table.

What SDR files contain

SDR is not a universal file format. Most files with the .sdr extension are proprietary SmartDraw drawings used for flowcharts, floor plans, network diagrams, org charts, mind maps, and similar visual documents.

A SmartDraw SDR normally stores shapes, text, connectors, positions, symbols, pages, and formatting. These visual objects do not have a direct equivalent in Excel cells, formulas, worksheets, or tables. Other software can use the same extension for unrelated formats, so confirm the originating application through the file association or by opening the file in its source program.

Changing drawing.sdr to drawing.xlsx only changes the filename extension; it does not convert the file.

What XLSX files provide

XLSX is the XML-based workbook format used by Microsoft Excel and supported by LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers, and many reporting systems. A workbook can contain worksheets, typed cells, formulas, tables, filters, charts, pivot tables, and formatting.

XLSX is suitable for the data behind a diagram, such as employee records used for an org chart or rows imported to generate a process diagram. It is not a replacement for an editable SmartDraw drawing. Keep the original SDR file for editing; export PDF, SVG, PNG, or another visual format when the diagram layout must be preserved.

Extract data and save it as XLSX

1. Make a copy of the SDR file and open it in SmartDraw or the confirmed source application.
2. Check whether the diagram was created from an Excel workbook, CSV file, database connection, or a data-driven SmartDraw feature. If the original workbook exists, use that file instead of extracting labels from the drawing; it retains formulas, cell types, hidden columns, and source records that may not appear in the diagram.
3. Look for an export or data command in the application, commonly under File → Export or the diagram's data or automation controls. Export the underlying records as Excel or CSV if that option is available.
4. If the export is CSV, import it into Excel with Data → From Text/CSV, select the correct delimiter and encoding, then use File → Save As and choose Excel Workbook (*.xlsx). In LibreOffice Calc, use File → Save As and select Excel 2007–365 (.xlsx).
5. Check column headings, dates, decimal separators, identifiers, and character encoding before distributing the workbook.

SmartDraw versions and diagram types do not necessarily expose a spreadsheet-data export. The product's Office integration and visual export options should not be treated as a guaranteed SDR-to-XLSX conversion: exporting or inserting a diagram into Office does not turn its shapes into usable worksheet cells.

When the SDR contains only a visual diagram

If there is no source dataset or data-export command, export the drawing as a high-resolution PNG or PDF and recreate the required table in Excel. To keep the diagram visible in a workbook, use Insert → Pictures in Excel to add a PNG or JPEG; this preserves appearance but not editable diagram structure.

For a simple, clearly printed table, Microsoft 365 versions of Excel that include Data → From Picture → Picture From File can run OCR on an exported image. Review every recognized cell before insertion. OCR commonly confuses O with 0, loses merged-cell structure, misreads decimal separators, and converts identifiers such as 00125 to numbers.

Format identifier columns as Text before entering or importing values with leading zeroes, long account numbers, or codes such as AB-004. CSV cannot preserve formulas, multiple worksheets, cell formatting, or reliable data types; saving the imported data as XLSX restores those workbook features only after they are explicitly created in Excel.

Online conversion and compatibility limits

There is no general-purpose online conversion route that reliably converts a SmartDraw drawing into a meaningful native Excel workbook. Services advertising SDR conversion may support a different SDR format, rasterize the drawing, or produce an unusable file. Use SmartDraw's official web application only when it supports the specific file and export required, and avoid uploading confidential floor plans, network maps, or organizational data to unverified conversion sites.

Shapes, connector routing, layers, page layout, and SmartDraw symbols cannot be translated into Excel's row-and-column model. An XLSX file can preserve exported records and manually reconstructed values, but not the original diagram's editable visual behavior.
