Free online DB3 to RTF converter

A DB3 file may contain database records that need to be shared as an editable document in a word processor. Converting it to RTF produces a portable formatted file, but the database structure, indexes, and queries must be represented as tables or plain text.

What the DB3 format is

.db3 most commonly identifies a dBASE III database file, also called a DBF file. dBASE III and compatible applications use it to store records in fields and rows; older business, accounting, inventory, and genealogy programs are common sources.

The extension is not definitive. Some applications use .db3 for SQLite 3 databases. A SQLite file normally begins with the header SQLite format 3, while a dBASE file has a DBF header and may depend on companion memo files such as .dbt or .fpt. Identify the database type before choosing a converter.

What the RTF format is

RTF, or Rich Text Format, is a document format supported by Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WordPad, and many other word processors. It can preserve basic formatting such as fonts, emphasis, paragraphs, page settings, and tables without requiring a proprietary word-processing format.

RTF is suitable for emailing records, editing extracted data, printing reports, and archiving a readable snapshot. It is not a database format: relationships, indexes, validation rules, forms, macros, and searchable queries are not retained.

How to actually convert DB3 to RTF

Using the built-in online converter

1. Make a backup of the original .db3 file and include any associated memo files if the database uses them.
2. Open the DB3-to-RTF converter on 101convert.com, upload the file, and select RTF as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting RTF file when processing finishes.
4. Open the result in LibreOffice Writer or Microsoft Word and check field names, character encoding, dates, decimal values, and long memo fields.

This method is appropriate when the file contains ordinary dBASE records and the required result is a readable document rather than a reusable database. Do not upload confidential or regulated data unless the service's handling and retention terms meet your requirements.

Using LibreOffice for a dBASE DB3 file

1. Install LibreOffice and create a new Base database through File → New → Database.
2. Choose Connect to an existing database, select dBASE, and specify the folder containing the DB3 file. dBASE connections generally use the folder as the data source, so place related files together.
3. Open the table in Base and verify that text, dates, numbers, and memo fields display correctly.
4. Select the records or fields to export, copy them, and paste them into LibreOffice Writer. Use a table layout if the output must remain easy to scan.
5. Save the document through File → Save As, choose Rich Text Format (.rtf), and confirm the format when prompted.

For a report rather than a raw data dump, filter or sort the table in Base first, then copy only the required records. If the table is very large, export it in sections or create a report before copying it into Writer.

If the DB3 file is SQLite

A SQLite DB3 file must be opened with a SQLite-compatible application, not a dBASE reader. Use a database browser to run a query, export the result as CSV or HTML, and open that result in LibreOffice Calc or Writer. Copy the required rows into Writer and save as .rtf. A direct database-to-RTF conversion cannot represent multiple SQLite tables, joins, or relational constraints in one ordinary document without defining how they should be laid out.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Data is flattened: an RTF file normally contains one or more tables or paragraphs; it does not preserve the original DB3 schema or database behavior.
• Memo fields may be lost: dBASE memo content can reside in a separate .dbt or .fpt file. Keep that companion file with the DB3 during import and verify long fields after conversion.
• Encoding can change: older dBASE files may use a code page recorded in a .mdx or database setting. Incorrect encoding can corrupt accented characters, so compare names and non-ASCII text with the source.
• Large tables need layout control: wide fields may create unreadable pages or wrap badly in RTF. Remove unnecessary columns, set landscape orientation, or split the output into several tables.
• RTF is not ideal for preservation of raw data: retain the original DB3 and its companion files alongside the RTF export if the records may need to be re-imported or audited.
