What the SAV format is

.sav is most commonly the native data format of IBM SPSS Statistics. It stores cases, variables, value labels, missing-value definitions, measurement levels, and other metadata. GNU PSPP can also open and work with many SPSS .sav files.

You may encounter SAV files after receiving survey data, research datasets, market-analysis files, or exported statistical records. The extension is also used by some computer games for saved progress, so the file's source program must be identified before conversion. A game save or another application-specific SAV file does not normally contain document content that can be meaningfully exported to RTF.

What the RTF format is

RTF, or Rich Text Format, stores formatted text with information such as fonts, paragraph alignment, basic styles, colors, and tables. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WordPad, and many other word processors can open it.

RTF is appropriate for distributing an analysis report when recipients need an editable document and do not use SPSS. It generally preserves report formatting better than plain text, while remaining less application-specific than a proprietary word-processing format.

How to actually convert SAV to RTF

Using IBM SPSS Statistics

1. Open IBM SPSS Statistics and choose File → Open → Data.
2. Select the .sav file. Confirm that variables, labels, and cases display correctly.
3. Generate the material you need, such as frequency tables, descriptive statistics, charts, or regression output, using the appropriate Analyze menus.
4. In the Output Viewer, choose File → Export.
5. Select RTF or the Word/RTF document type, choose the output objects to include, specify a filename ending in .rtf, and export.
6. Open the resulting file in Word or LibreOffice Writer and check page breaks, table widths, symbols, and chart placement.

This procedure converts the displayed analysis output into a document. It does not turn every raw case and variable into a fully editable RTF table unless you first create an output table containing that data.

Quality and compatibility limits

A SAV dataset is structured data, not an RTF document, so conversion necessarily changes its representation. Variable properties, formulas, syntax, labels, missing-value rules, weighting settings, and statistical metadata may not survive in the RTF file. RTF preserves the rendered report, not the original dataset's analytical behavior.

For a complete record, retain the original .sav file and, if applicable, the SPSS syntax file alongside the RTF export. Review non-Latin characters, decimal separators, wide tables, footnotes, and charts after conversion because fonts and page layout can vary between SPSS, Word, LibreOffice, and other RTF readers.
