A program that requires an IBM SPSS Viewer file needs more than a file-extension change: an .sav dataset must be analyzed before its results can be saved as .spv. The conversion is used to preserve and share formatted SPSS output with users who need to reopen it in IBM SPSS Statistics.
What the SAV format is
.sav is the native dataset format of IBM SPSS Statistics. It stores cases and variables, value labels, missing-value definitions, measurement levels, variable labels, formats, and other metadata used in statistical analysis.
IBM SPSS Statistics creates SAV files through File → Save As. Survey systems, statistical packages, and data archives also export this format. GNU PSPP can open many SAV files, but SPSS-specific features, long variable names, encoding, or metadata may not transfer completely.
What the SPV format is
.spv is the proprietary Output Viewer document format used by IBM SPSS Statistics, introduced with the modern Viewer in SPSS Statistics 16. It stores generated results such as pivot tables, charts, statistical tests, warnings, notes, and procedure output; it does not store the original dataset as an editable data table.
SPV is suitable for reopening formatted results in IBM SPSS Statistics and sharing them with other SPSS users. It is not a direct alternative to SAV: an SPV file contains only the output produced by the procedures that were run.
How to create an SPV file from SAV
There is no direct, lossless container conversion from SAV to SPV. Use IBM SPSS Statistics to open the dataset, run the required analyses, and save the Output Viewer document.
- Open IBM SPSS Statistics and choose File → Open → Data.
- Select the source
.savfile and confirm any prompts about encoding, missing values, or file format. - Run the required procedures, such as Analyze → Descriptive Statistics → Frequencies, Analyze → Compare Means, or the procedures specified by the analysis plan.
- In the Output Viewer window, choose File → Save As.
- Enter a filename with the
.spvextension and save the output document.
For repeatable output, run SPSS syntax instead of selecting procedures manually. This example opens a dataset, creates a frequency table, and saves the Viewer output:
GET FILE='C:/data/source.sav'.
FREQUENCIES VARIABLES=ALL.
OUTPUT SAVE OUTFILE='C:/data/results.spv'.
EXECUTE.
Change the paths and procedures to match the required analysis. If an Output Viewer document is already open, save it with File → Save As; the dataset does not need to be converted separately.
Other software and online services
IBM SPSS Statistics is the appropriate desktop option when the destination must be a genuine SPV file. GNU PSPP can analyze many SAV datasets and export results as PDF, HTML, text, or other supported formats, but it does not reliably create SPV documents compatible with IBM SPSS Statistics.
Reputable online file-conversion services generally do not offer a genuine SAV-to-SPV conversion because SPV requires statistical procedures and Viewer output, not just a format change. Do not upload confidential survey or research data to an online service; use IBM SPSS Statistics locally, or export results to a non-proprietary format for sharing.
Compatibility and quality limitations
The SPV contents depend entirely on the procedures, variables, filters, weighting, missing-value settings, and display options used during analysis. Opening and saving an SAV file alone does not create meaningful statistical output, and the resulting SPV does not automatically contain every case or variable.
SAV compatibility is not universally backward- and forward-compatible. IBM SPSS Statistics releases can differ in supported metadata, encoding, procedures, and file features; verify the dataset after opening it in another release. SPV is also version-sensitive, and newer output may not open correctly in older releases.
For recipients who do not use IBM SPSS Statistics, export the Viewer document through File → Export to PDF, HTML, Excel, or another available format. Retain the original SAV dataset, the SPSS syntax, and the SPV output when reproducibility or later editing matters.
