Understanding PMM and PMD file formats

PMM files are project files created by MikuMikuDance (MMD), a popular 3D animation software used for creating dance animations with Vocaloid characters. These files store all the animation data, model positions, camera movements, and effects for a project.

PMD files, on the other hand, are Polygon Model Data files, also used by MikuMikuDance. They contain 3D model data, including mesh, bones, textures, and morphs. While PMM files represent the entire animation project, PMD files are specifically for individual 3D models used within those projects.

Why convert PMM to PMD?

Direct conversion from PMM to PMD is not typical, as they serve different purposes in MMD. However, users may want to extract or save a model from a project file (PMM) as a standalone PMD file for reuse or sharing. This process involves exporting the model data from the project rather than a straightforward file format conversion.

How to convert PMM to PMD

Since PMM files contain references to PMD models rather than the model data itself, you cannot directly convert a PMM file to a PMD file. Instead, you need to:

1. Open your PMM project in MikuMikuDance.
2. Identify the model you wish to extract or save.
3. If you have edited the model within MMD, use PMDEditor (or PmxEditor for PMX files) to manually apply those changes to the original PMD file.
4. Save or export the model as a PMD file using File → Save As in PMDEditor.

There is no automated tool that directly converts PMM to PMD, as PMM files do not contain the full model data. You must work with the original PMD files referenced in the PMM project.
