Convert JPG to PMD

Place a JPG in PageMaker or use it as a texture for an MMD PMD model.

How to convert jpg to pmd file

A legacy PageMaker publication may require a .pmd file after a JPG is placed into its layout. MikuMikuDance projects also use .pmd for 3D models, but a JPG can only serve as a texture; it cannot become a complete model by itself.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a lossy raster-image format used for photographs, scans, camera output, web images, and image-editor exports. Cameras, phones, scanners, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and web browsers commonly create or display JPG files. JPEG compression reduces file size by discarding image detail, and repeated editing and saving can reduce quality further.

What PMD can mean

PMD is not one universal format. The two relevant meanings are:

  • Adobe PageMaker document: a legacy desktop-publishing file that stores page size, text frames, typography, graphics placement, and publication structure. Its advantage is preserving an editable PageMaker layout, but a placed JPG remains a single raster object.
  • MikuMikuDance model: a model-data format containing a 3D mesh, materials, bones, morphs, and related model information. A JPG can be assigned as a texture, but it does not contain the geometry, rigging, or model data required for a usable PMD model.

Identify the application that will open the output before converting. A PageMaker PMD and an MikuMikuDance PMD are unrelated formats despite sharing the extension.

Create a PageMaker PMD

  1. Open a compatible installation of Adobe PageMaker, preferably PageMaker 7, on an operating system that can run the legacy software.
  2. Create a publication with File → New → Document. Set the page size, orientation, margins, columns, and page count.
  3. Choose File → Place, select a file such as photo.jpg, and click or drag on the page to position it.
  4. Resize or crop the graphic with PageMaker's control palette and frame options. Constrain proportions while resizing to prevent distortion.
  5. Recreate any required text, columns, borders, and other layout elements in PageMaker. If the JPG is a scan of a finished page, its text and graphics remain flattened and cannot be edited separately.
  6. Save through File → Save As in PageMaker's native document format, using a name such as layout.pmd.

PageMaker normally keeps placed graphics as linked external files rather than embedding their full contents in the PMD. Keep photo.jpg with layout.pmd and preserve the original path or update the link when moving the project. Use PageMaker's publication-collection or service-provider packaging feature when available.

Scribus and LibreOffice Draw can place the JPG and export PDF, but they do not reliably write native Adobe PageMaker PMD files. Online converters cannot reconstruct an editable PageMaker publication from one image; they may only produce another image or a PDF. Use an online service only for a different target format and do not upload confidential files to an untrusted service.

Create an MikuMikuDance PMD

Use PMX Editor or a Blender workflow with a maintained MikuMikuDance import/export add-on. Start with a 3D mesh, then create or import the required bones, materials, and morphs. In PMX Editor, assign the JPG as a material texture, check its texture path, and save or export the completed model as .pmd when the tool supports that export.

Importing a JPG into PMX Editor does not generate a body, clothing, rig, or camera-ready model. A JPG may be used as a texture image or reference, but producing a model from a photograph requires separate 3D modeling and rigging, or an image-to-3D tool followed by correction in a compatible model editor. PMD export can also lose features that exist only in newer PMX or application-specific formats.

Quality and compatibility limits

The JPG remains raster data in both workflows. PageMaker cannot restore detail removed by compression, and enlarging the image can cause visible pixelation. Prepare photographs at their intended physical size; approximately 300 ppi is a common print target, although the required resolution depends on output conditions. Avoid repeatedly resaving the source JPG.

PageMaker PMD files require PageMaker or a compatible legacy conversion workflow; current Adobe InDesign versions generally do not provide dependable direct PMD support. MikuMikuDance PMD files require a compatible model viewer or application, and missing texture files, incorrect relative paths, unsupported materials, or conversion between PMD and PMX can make the model display incorrectly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a JPG directly into a PMD model?

No, changing a JPG into a PMD file does not create the model geometry, materials, bones, or other data required by a PMD model. A JPG can be used as a texture for an existing model, but it is not itself a PMD model.

Will my JPG be embedded in the PMD file as a texture?

Usually, the PMD model stores a reference to a texture image rather than turning the JPG into model data. The texture must remain available under the expected name and path, or the model may appear untextured.

Why does my PMD viewer reject a JPG renamed to .pmd?

A PMD viewer expects structured 3D model data, while a JPG contains only raster image data. Renaming the extension does not add vertices, materials, bone information, or texture mapping.

Will the JPG quality change when it is used with a PMD model?

The texture keeps the JPG's existing raster resolution and compression artifacts, although its appearance can change when mapped onto a model and viewed at different distances. Fine details may look blurred if the source resolution is too low.
