How to convert mpc to aiff file

  • Audio
An audio editor, sampler, or Apple-oriented production system may require AIFF even when the source library contains Musepack files. Converting to AIFF decodes the audio into uncompressed PCM for editing and interchange, but produces much larger files without restoring detail lost during MPC encoding.

What the MPC format is

In this context, .mpc identifies Musepack, a lossy audio format designed for efficient music compression. Musepack is used mainly in older music libraries, archives, and collections created with Musepack encoders or players; it is less common than MP3, AAC, or FLAC.

The .mpc extension should be verified before conversion. Akai MPC projects and samples commonly use other extensions, such as .xpj, .pgm, or .snd; an Akai project is not Musepack audio and cannot be converted directly to AIFF unless Akai software exports its audio content.

What the AIFF format is

AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) normally stores uncompressed PCM audio. It is supported by many audio editors, digital audio workstations, samplers, and macOS applications, and provides predictable sample data for editing, mixing, and interchange.

AIFF commonly uses big-endian PCM, although applications may also accept other AIFF variants. It preserves the decoded MPC samples without another lossy compression step, but its files are substantially larger than MPC files. AIFF is appropriate when the destination software requires it or when uncompressed PCM compatibility is more useful than compact storage.

Convert MPC online

  1. Open the MPC-to-AIFF converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload a Musepack .mpc file and select AIFF as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion, then download the resulting .aiff file when processing finishes.

This method requires no installation and is suitable for ordinary, non-sensitive files. Do not upload confidential audio or material subject to distribution restrictions unless the service and your permissions allow it.

Convert MPC with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suitable for command-line and batch conversion when the installed build includes Musepack decoding support.

  1. Open a terminal in the folder containing the source file.
  2. Run ffmpeg -i "input.mpc" -c:a pcm_s16be "output.aiff".

This creates 16-bit, big-endian PCM AIFF, a broadly compatible setting. For 24-bit output, use -c:a pcm_s24be. To resample or change the channel count, add options such as -ar 48000 or -ac 2; leave the source sample rate and channel count unchanged unless the receiving application requires different values.

For multiple files, run the command separately or use a shell script appropriate to your operating system. Quote filenames containing spaces and verify that FFmpeg reports the input as Musepack rather than rejecting the file.

Convert MPC with desktop software

foobar2000 can convert Musepack files on Windows and supports batch processing. Add the files to a playlist, select them, then choose Convert → .... Select or create an AIFF output preset, choose PCM encoding and the required bit depth, set the destination, and start the conversion. If foobar2000 does not recognize the file, install a current Musepack decoder component compatible with the installed version.

On macOS, a Musepack-capable converter such as XLD may be used if its current version recognizes the particular MPC file. Set AIFF as the output format in its preferences, choose the required PCM settings, add the files, and start conversion. Software support for older Musepack variants can differ, so test one file before converting a large collection.

Quality and compatibility limits

Musepack is lossy. Conversion to AIFF only decodes the existing MPC data; it cannot restore information removed during encoding. Selecting 24-bit AIFF does not create 24-bit source detail, and converting to a higher sample rate does not improve the original recording.

After conversion, check the duration, sample rate, channel count, and peak levels in the target application. Some older software accepts only 16-bit PCM AIFF, while many production systems also accept 24-bit files. AIFF metadata support varies: album art, replay-gain values, custom tags, and some cue information may not transfer. Keep the original MPC files when their metadata or exact source is needed.
