How to convert mpa to aiff file

  • Audio
A sampler, digital audio workstation, or older Mac-based editing application may require AIFF instead of an MPEG audio file. Converting MPA to AIFF makes the audio available as uncompressed PCM for editing and compatibility, but it does not restore detail removed by MPEG compression.

What the MPA format is

MPA is a filename extension commonly used for an MPEG audio elementary stream, most often MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Layer II audio. Broadcast systems, video-authoring software, older audio applications, and programs that extract audio from MPEG video may produce MPA files. Some software also uses .mpa for other MPEG audio layers, so the extension alone does not identify the exact codec, bitrate, sample rate, or channel layout.

Inspect the source before converting when those properties matter. With FFmpeg installed, run ffprobe input.mpa to display the codec, sample rate, channel count, duration, and bitrate.

What the AIFF format is

AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) is an audio container used by music-production software, samplers, notation programs, and Apple-oriented workflows. Standard AIFF normally stores uncompressed PCM audio, allowing predictable editing and avoiding another lossy compression stage.

AIFF files are much larger than compressed MPA files because they store individual audio samples without MPEG compression. An AIFF file is lossless relative to the decoded PCM it contains, not relative to the original recording if the MPA source was already lossy. AIFF is therefore suitable when a receiving application specifically requires it or when an uncompressed working copy is needed.

How to convert MPA to AIFF

Using 101convert.com

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software:

  1. Open the MPA-to-AIFF converter.
  2. Select the .mpa file and start the conversion.
  3. Download the resulting .aiff file.
  4. Open the output in the target sampler or audio application before deleting the source.

For confidential or very large recordings, use a local converter instead of uploading the file.

Using FFmpeg

  1. Install FFmpeg from a trusted package for your operating system.
  2. Open a terminal in the folder containing the MPA file.
  3. Run ffmpeg -i input.mpa -c:a pcm_s16be output.aiff.
  4. Replace the input and output names as needed; quote names containing spaces, such as ffmpeg -i "speech recording.mpa" -c:a pcm_s16be "speech recording.aiff".

The pcm_s16be option creates 16-bit, big-endian PCM in a broadly compatible AIFF file. To retain higher source resolution, use pcm_s24be for 24-bit or pcm_s32be for 32-bit output, for example ffmpeg -i input.mpa -c:a pcm_s24be output.aiff. These settings do not recreate information lost during MPEG encoding.

Keep the source sample rate and channel layout by omitting resampling and channel options. If the receiving software requires specific values, add options such as -ar 48000 for 48 kHz and -ac 2 for stereo:

ffmpeg -i input.mpa -ar 48000 -ac 2 -c:a pcm_s16be output.aiff

Using Audacity

Audacity can import MPA files when its FFmpeg support is installed and available:

  1. Open the file with File → Import → Audio.
  2. Choose the MPA file and let Audacity decode it.
  3. Export it with File → Export Audio, select AIFF as the format, choose the required bit depth, and save.

Audacity is useful when you need to trim or inspect the audio during conversion, while FFmpeg is better suited to repeatable command-line or batch processing.

Quality and compatibility caveats

MPA is normally lossy, so conversion to uncompressed AIFF only decodes the existing audio. Do not use AIFF conversion as a way to improve fidelity, and avoid converting the file repeatedly between lossy formats.

Preserve the original sample rate, channel count, and duration unless the target application requires different settings. Resampling or changing stereo to mono alters the audio, and increasing bit depth cannot recover information absent from the MPA source.

If an application rejects the output, try 16-bit PCM at 44.1 or 48 kHz with the required mono or stereo layout. Some programs recognize only the .aif extension, while others expect .aiff; changing the extension alone does not convert the file, but renaming a valid AIFF output may satisfy an extension-specific application.
