A CAD or inspection application may require IGES when an MDL model must be exchanged with older engineering software, edited as surface geometry, or sent to a supplier. The conversion is only meaningful when the MDL file contains compatible geometric data; game and simulation MDL variants are not interchangeable with CAD models.

What the MDL format is

MDL is not one universal 3D CAD standard. In 3D software, the extension is used by several application-specific model formats, including polygonal assets for games or simulations and proprietary model databases. The creating program determines the file structure, units, coordinate system, assembly data, and whether the geometry consists of meshes, curves, or parametric surfaces.

You usually encounter an MDL file beside the application that produced it, its project files, textures, material definitions, or configuration data. Identify that program before converting. A model intended for a game engine or simulator may contain triangles, animations, and materials but no engineering surfaces; an IGES export in that case may be impossible or geometrically unsuitable.

What the IGES format is

IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) is a neutral CAD exchange format used for transferring wireframes, curves, and surface geometry between engineering systems. Common entities include lines and arcs, composite curves, parametric splines, and trimmed NURBS surfaces.

IGES is useful when the receiving system supports legacy CAD exchange or needs editable surface geometry. It generally transfers geometry rather than the complete feature tree, constraints, parametric history, materials, textures, or application-specific behavior. STEP is often a better choice for modern solid-model exchange when the recipient accepts it.

How to actually convert MDL to IGES

  1. Identify the MDL dialect. Check the file's originating application, project documentation, or header information. Do not rename the extension; renaming does not change the format.
  2. Use the originating application first. Open the model and use File → Export, File → Save as, or the application's CAD exchange command. Select IGES, then choose the required units, coordinate system, visible components, and surface or curve export options. If the application offers STEP, export that instead when the recipient supports it.
  3. Use the built-in online converter when the MDL variant is supported. On 101convert.com, select the MDL-to-IGES conversion, upload the file, choose IGES as the output, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. A converter can process only the MDL dialect and geometry types implemented by its importer.
  4. Validate the result in a CAD viewer or receiving system. Open the IGES file, confirm the model orientation and scale, inspect gaps between surfaces, and check that all required bodies or components are present. Re-export with different units or entity settings if the model is empty, incorrectly scaled, or incomplete.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A polygonal MDL asset cannot be converted into accurate analytic or NURBS CAD surfaces merely by changing formats. It may export as faceted geometry, lose textures and animation data, or fail if the converter accepts only CAD-oriented MDL files. An IGES file also commonly represents a solid as a collection of surfaces, so the recipient may need to stitch or heal those surfaces before manufacturing or further modeling.

Check units, tolerance, orientation, surface closure, and layer or component visibility after conversion. IGES transfers geometry more reliably than metadata; names, colors, assemblies, materials, feature history, and custom attributes may be omitted. For production use, compare critical dimensions against the source and request STEP or the originating native format when exact solid and assembly semantics are required.
