Convert JPG to ASL

Photoshop uses .asl files when a visual treatment must be reused as a layer-style preset on other layers or documents. A JPG cannot be automatically converted into an equivalent ASL, so the appearance must be recreated as editable effects before exporting the style.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a lossy raster format for photographs and other continuous-tone images. Cameras, phones, scanners, web browsers, Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, and Paint.NET commonly create or export JPG files.

A JPG contains flattened pixel data. It does not preserve Photoshop layers, layer effects, paths, editable text, or the settings used to produce a visual effect.

What the ASL format is

ASL is Adobe Photoshop's layer-style preset format. A preset can store reusable combinations of effects such as drop shadow, inner shadow, stroke, bevel and emboss, satin, color overlay, gradient overlay, and pattern overlay.

An ASL normally contains effect and blending settings, not the source JPG's pixels or a complete Photoshop document. Applying the preset to a layer can reproduce a similar treatment, but opening the ASL cannot recreate the original photograph or illustration.

How to create an ASL from a JPG

1. Open the JPG in Photoshop with File → Open.
2. Keep the original layer as a reference. Duplicate it with Layer → Duplicate Layer, or create a separate test layer if the intended style is for text, vector shapes, or transparent artwork.
3. Apply the required effects by double-clicking the layer in the Layers panel or using Layer → Layer Style. Adjust settings such as stroke size, shadow distance, opacity, blending mode, and overlay color.
4. Open Window → Styles. Select the layer containing the finished effects, open the Styles panel menu, and choose New Style.
5. Name the style and enable the options for including layer effects and, if required, layer blending settings. Confirm to add the preset to the Styles panel.
6. Select the new style or styles in the Styles panel, open its panel menu, choose Export Selected Styles, and save the file with an .asl extension.

Photoshop also provides a legacy export route through Edit → Presets → Preset Manager. Set Preset Type to Styles, select the required styles, choose Save Set, and save the resulting ASL file.

For an editable copy of the actual image, use File → Save As and save a .psd file instead. PSD can retain the image, layers, masks, text, and layer effects; ASL is only a reusable style preset.

Online and desktop options

Adobe Photoshop is the most reliable desktop application for creating and exporting ASL files. There is no meaningful one-click JPG-to-ASL converter because software cannot reliably infer separate editable effects from flattened pixels.

Photopea is a reputable browser-based alternative for manually opening a JPG, recreating layer effects, and working with Photoshop-style presets when its current ASL import and export support meets the requirement. Check the resulting file in the target Photoshop version before distributing it. Avoid uploading confidential images to unknown conversion sites.

Quality and compatibility limitations

JPEG artifacts affect the reference image but do not supply usable layer-style instructions. The exported ASL stores settings rather than a fixed rendered result, so its appearance can change with the target layer's dimensions, transparency, contents, blending mode, document resolution, and color profile.

A style designed on a photograph may not look correct on text or a small vector shape; test it on the type of layer that will use it. ASL is primarily a Photoshop format. Other editors may import some ASL effects, omit unsupported settings, or provide no ASL export, and newer Photoshop effects may not render identically in older versions.
