Convert IDW to DWG

A fabricator, AutoCAD user, or document-control system may require a DWG drawing instead of an Inventor IDW. Exporting from Inventor preserves editable CAD entities more reliably than printing to PDF and converting the PDF afterward.

What IDW files contain

IDW is Autodesk Inventor’s native 2D drawing format. Inventor users create IDW files for drawing sheets, base and projected views, sections, dimensions, annotations, parts lists, title blocks, and revision data.

An IDW commonly references Inventor part files (.ipt) and assembly files (.iam). Keep the drawing, model files, and active Inventor project file (.ipj) together when the drawing must update or when referenced views need to be resolved.

What DWG files provide

DWG is Autodesk’s native AutoCAD drawing format and is supported by AutoCAD and many CAD applications. A DWG can contain 2D geometry, layers, text, dimensions, blocks, hatch patterns, and paper-space layouts.

DWG is appropriate for editable 2D drawing exchange with AutoCAD users. For laser, CNC, or plasma workflows, the required deliverable is often a .dxf containing only the required profile or sheet-metal flat pattern, not a complete drawing-sheet DWG.

Export an IDW from Autodesk Inventor

Autodesk Inventor is the preferred converter because it reads IDW drawing views and Inventor drawing data directly. AutoCAD, Autodesk DWG TrueView, and Inventor View do not provide a reliable IDW-to-editable-DWG conversion workflow.

1. Start Inventor and activate the project that contains the drawing’s referenced models: Get Started → Projects.
2. Open the .idw file. Resolve missing .ipt or .iam references before updating the drawing or exporting it.
3. Select File → Save As → Save Copy As.
4. Select AutoCAD DWG Files (*.dwg) as the file type, enter a destination name, and select Options.
5. Choose the required AutoCAD/DWG release and the sheet-export settings available in the installed Inventor version. Select all sheets only when the recipient needs them.
6. Save the DWG and inspect it in the recipient’s AutoCAD version. Check layouts, view scale, dimension appearance, lineweights, layers, hatching, and title-block text.

For batches, use Inventor’s Tools → Task Scheduler when the installed release offers an Export Files task with DWG output. Test the task on copied files first, because batch exports can overwrite existing output files and expose unresolved model references.

Online conversion options

Use a web converter only for drawings that are not confidential and do not depend on unavailable model references. Established services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar may offer IDW-to-DWG conversion, but confirm that their current format selectors explicitly list both IDW input and DWG output before uploading a file.

Online services can fail on drawings with external references, custom fonts, complex views, or unsupported Inventor versions. Autodesk Viewer is useful for viewing an IDW in a browser, but it is not a substitute for Inventor when an editable DWG is required.

Compatibility and quality checks

• The exported DWG is a drawing deliverable, not an editable Inventor parametric model. Inventor view associativity and model links do not become equivalent AutoCAD parametric features.
• Select an older DWG release when the recipient uses an older AutoCAD version. A newer DWG may not open in older AutoCAD releases without conversion.
• Missing SHX or TrueType fonts cause AutoCAD font substitution and can change text width, wrapping, and title-block layout. Use approved recipient fonts or provide licensed font files where permitted.
• Verify units and plotted scale. A correctly exported paper-space sheet can still be unsuitable for CAM software expecting full-size model-space geometry.
• For manufacturing import, remove borders, notes, dimensions, hidden lines, duplicate entities, and open contours. Confirm closed profiles and final dimensions in the destination CAM system.
