Convert HDA to HPD

Understanding HDA and HPD file formats

HDA files are most commonly associated with Houdini Digital Assets, used in SideFX Houdini, a 3D animation and visual effects software. These files encapsulate reusable digital assets, including geometry, shaders, and scripts, for use within Houdini projects.

HPD files, on the other hand, are less standardized but are often linked to HotDocs Publisher Documents, used in document automation and template creation. HPD files store templates, scripts, and logic for generating documents dynamically.

Can you convert HDA to HPD?

Direct conversion between HDA (Houdini Digital Asset) and HPD (HotDocs Publisher Document) is generally not possible due to their fundamentally different purposes and structures. HDA files are for 3D assets, while HPD files are for document templates. There is no standard software or converter that supports this conversion, as the data types and use cases do not overlap.

Alternative approaches

If you need to transfer information from an HDA file to an HPD file, you would need to manually extract relevant data (such as scripts or metadata) from the HDA file and then recreate or embed this information within a new HPD template using HotDocs Author or HotDocs Developer.

To manually transfer data, open your HDA file in Houdini, export any scripts or text you need, then use File → New in HotDocs Author to create a new HPD file and paste or adapt the content as required.
