Convert EDDX to EDX

An older EdrawSoft application may accept only .edx, while newer EdrawMax installations commonly create .eddx files. Native conversion is needed when the recipient must continue editing the diagram in an older Edraw application rather than receive a PDF or image.

What the EDDX format is

.eddx is EdrawSoft's XML-based format for editable EdrawMax diagrams. EdrawMax uses it for flowcharts, organizational charts, network diagrams, floor plans, mind maps, business graphics, and other vector layouts.

An EDDX file stores diagram objects, connectors, text, page settings, themes, symbols, and other document data. It is used mainly by EdrawMax users exchanging editable diagrams or storing projects from newer EdrawSoft releases; it is not a general-purpose image format.

What the EDX format is

.edx is an older EdrawSoft XML drawing format associated with legacy Edraw applications. Its main advantage is compatibility with software versions that recognize EDX but do not recognize the newer EDDX extension. It remains an editable diagram format, not a format intended for ordinary image viewers.

Renaming diagram.eddx to diagram.edx does not convert the internal document structure. The receiving program may reject the file or report it as damaged.

How to convert EDDX to EDX

1. Install a desktop release of EdrawMax that opens the source file. Back up the original .eddx file before testing conversion.
2. Open the backup in EdrawMax using File → Open. Check every page, including text, connectors, symbols, embedded images, and page layout.
3. Use File → Save As and inspect the file-type list. Select EDX or Edraw XML (*.edx) if that option is available.
4. Save under a new name such as diagram.edx. Close and reopen the result in the intended Edraw application to confirm that it remains editable.

EDX export is version-dependent. If the installed EdrawMax release does not list EDX under Save As, it does not provide a supported conversion path; do not force the conversion by changing the extension.

When the target is a legacy Edraw release, use a compatible, legitimately licensed older Edraw version in a separate environment. Open the EDDX file only if that version supports it, then use File → Save As → EDX. Keep the original because an older release may discard newer symbols, themes, effects, page features, or embedded content.

Compatibility and online conversion

EDX compatibility depends on the exact EdrawSoft product and version. Before converting many files, test one representative document in the target application and verify fonts, symbol libraries, connector routing, page sizes, and embedded graphics.

No general-purpose online converter should be assumed to support native EDDX-to-EDX conversion. Many online graphics converters process only raster images or common exchange formats and cannot preserve Edraw's editable object model. Uploading a diagram can also disclose confidential labels, network layouts, or business data. Use EdrawMax locally unless a service explicitly documents support for both Edraw formats and has been approved for the file.

For appearance-only sharing, export from EdrawMax to PDF or SVG instead. These formats can preserve the visible layout, but they do not replace EDX when the recipient needs native Edraw editing.
