What the DFONT format is

DFONT is a macOS font suitcase format that stores one or more bitmap or outline font resources in a resource-fork container. Older macOS releases and classic Mac applications used it; you may encounter DFONT files in legacy font collections, application folders, backups, or fonts copied from older systems.

A DFONT can contain multiple sizes, styles, or faces, so conversion may require selecting a particular family member rather than treating the file as one ordinary font. Modern font editors do not all open DFONT directly.

What the WOFF2 format is

WOFF2 is a compressed webfont container based on sfnt font data, including TrueType and OpenType fonts. Browsers load it through CSS declarations such as @font-face, and web servers commonly serve it with the MIME type font/woff2.

WOFF2 usually produces a smaller file than WOFF or an uncompressed TTF/OTF because it uses Brotli compression and specialized font-table transformations. Use it for browser delivery; retain the original font or an editable TTF/OTF separately for desktop installation and future editing.

How to convert DFONT to WOFF2

Using FontForge

1. Install a current FontForge build with WOFF2 generation support.
2. Open the DFONT with File → Open. If it contains several faces, choose the required face in the font selection dialog.
3. Check the glyphs, family name, style name, encoding, and metrics. Remove unwanted faces or duplicate naming records if the suitcase contains several resources.
4. Choose File → Generate Fonts, select WOFF2 as the output format, enter a filename such as Example-Regular.woff2, and generate the file.
5. If FontForge cannot generate WOFF2 directly, generate TTF or OTF first, then compress that output with FontTools.

Using FontTools after exporting TTF or OTF

Install FontTools with Brotli support:

Convert the intermediate font with Python:

Replace the input filename with the generated TTF or OTF. FontTools cannot repair a malformed DFONT; use FontForge or another font editor to extract and validate the face first.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

WOFF2 compression should not change the glyph outlines, but conversion can expose problems already present in the DFONT, including missing Unicode mappings, obsolete bitmap-only resources, incorrect naming tables, or incomplete hinting. Test the generated file in the target browsers and at the required sizes.

Do not assume every resource in a multi-face DFONT becomes one WOFF2 file. Generate separate WOFF2 files for regular, bold, italic, and other faces, then reference each with a matching font-weight and font-style in CSS. Check the font license before publishing the result on a website.
