What the DFONT format is

DFONT is a Macintosh font suitcase format that stores one or more bitmap or outline fonts in a data-fork file. It was used by Classic Mac OS and older macOS software, and commonly appears in legacy system-font collections, archived application resources, and font folders copied from older Macs.

DFONT files can contain multiple faces or styles, such as regular, bold, and italic. The format may preserve Macintosh-specific resource information that modern font tools do not need, so conversion normally extracts each usable face into a modern outline font before creating the webfont.

What the WOFF format is

WOFF, the Web Open Font Format, is a font container intended for browser use with CSS @font-face. WOFF compresses TrueType or OpenType font data and can retain the glyphs, metrics, naming records, and layout tables required for web rendering.

Use WOFF when a website or web application needs a browser-loadable font. WOFF2 is newer and usually smaller, but a request specifically for .woff generally means the original WOFF format, also called WOFF 1.

How to actually convert DFONT to WOFF

FontForge is the most practical desktop tool for this conversion because it can open many legacy Macintosh font files and generate webfont output.

1. Install and open FontForge.
2. Choose File → Open and select the .dfont file.
3. If FontForge displays multiple faces, open and convert each required face separately; do not assume a suitcase represents one CSS font.
4. Check the glyph preview and font metrics, then choose File → Generate Fonts.
5. Select WOFF as the output format, specify a filename such as legacy-regular.woff, and generate the file.
6. Repeat the process for bold, italic, and other faces, using distinct filenames.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

DFONT files may contain bitmap-only faces. Those cannot be converted into scalable outlines without recreating the glyphs; exporting them as WOFF does not improve their resolution.

Inspect the generated font in a browser before deployment. Check accented characters, punctuation, kerning, line spacing, and bold or italic matching, because old Macintosh naming records and encoding tables can produce missing glyphs or incorrect family names.

Use separate WOFF files for each style and declare them with matching font-weight and font-style values in CSS. FontForge may preserve more data than a web project needs; subsetting the font after conversion can reduce download size, but removing glyphs or OpenType tables can affect language coverage and shaping.
