Free online TTF to WOFF2 converter

Websites often receive fonts as TTF files but need WOFF2 for browser delivery. Converting the font reduces download size and lets CSS load it efficiently without changing the typeface's intended outlines.

What the TTF format is

TTF, or TrueType Font, is a font file format that stores glyph outlines, spacing, naming information, and font metrics. Operating systems use TTF files to install fonts for word processors, design applications, browsers, and publishing software.

Font editors such as FontForge, Glyphs, FontLab, and Birdfont can create or export TTF files. Commercial typefaces, open-source font projects, office documents, and design assets commonly include them. Some OpenType fonts use TrueType outlines and use the .ttf extension.

What the WOFF2 format is

WOFF2 is a webfont container intended for delivery through browsers. It compresses font data with Brotli and applies specialized transformations to some font tables, usually producing a much smaller file than the equivalent TTF.

Use WOFF2 with CSS @font-face rules. Its smaller transfer size reduces bandwidth and download time, and current desktop and mobile browsers support it. WOFF2 is a delivery format rather than an editable master format, so retain the original TTF or source project for future changes.

How to convert TTF to WOFF2

Using the WOFF2 command-line tools

1. Install or build the WOFF2 utilities for your operating system. The package includes the woff2_compress executable.
2. Put the source file in a working directory and run woff2_compress MyFont.ttf.
3. The utility normally creates MyFont.woff2 in the same directory.

This performs a direct conversion and does not deliberately remove characters. Test the output in a browser or inspect it with a font tool before publishing.

Using FontTools

Install FontTools and its Brotli support with python -m pip install fonttools brotli. Then run fonttools ttLib.woff2 compress MyFont.ttf; the command normally writes MyFont.woff2 beside the source file.

For a smaller web-specific font, use FontTools' subsetting command deliberately:

Subsetting removes glyphs outside the selected ranges. Add every required accented character, symbol, and writing system, or convert the complete TTF instead.

Check the font license and the service's file-handling terms before uploading a font that is not licensed for third-party processing.

Referencing the result in CSS

Place the generated file in the website's font directory and reference it with the WOFF2 format and MIME type:

Configure the server to send WOFF2 files as font/woff2. If the font is served from another origin, configure an appropriate CORS policy.

Quality and compatibility limits

Standard conversion preserves the font's rendering data, but the WOFF2 file is compressed and may not be accepted by every font editor. Keep the original TTF, variable-font source, or authoring project; do not use WOFF2 as the only archival copy.

Modern browsers support WOFF2, but Internet Explorer and other legacy clients do not. If those clients are required, provide a WOFF or TTF fallback after the WOFF2 source in the same @font-face rule and test the target browsers.
