Understanding ttf and fon file formats
TTF (TrueType Font) is a widely used font format developed by Apple and Microsoft. It supports scalable vector fonts, ensuring high-quality rendering at any size and is compatible with most modern operating systems and applications.
FON is a legacy bitmap font format used primarily in older versions of Microsoft Windows. Unlike TTF, FON files contain fixed-size, rasterized font glyphs, making them less flexible but essential for certain retro or embedded applications.
Why convert ttf to fon?
Converting a TTF file to a FON file is necessary when you need to use a font in older Windows environments or specific software that only supports bitmap fonts. This conversion is common in retro computing, embedded systems, or custom software development for legacy platforms.
How to convert ttf to fon
Since TTF and FON are fundamentally different (vector vs. bitmap), the conversion process involves rasterizing the TTF font at specific sizes and generating a FON file. This is not a direct conversion and may require manual adjustments for optimal results.
Best software for ttf to fon conversion
FontForge is a powerful, open-source font editor that supports both TTF and FON formats. It allows you to import a TTF file, rasterize it, and export it as a FON file. Here’s how to do it:
- Open FontForge and go to File → Open to load your TTF file.
- Adjust the font as needed, then select File → Generate Fonts.
- In the format dropdown, choose Windows Bitmap Font (.fon) and save the file.
Note: You may need to specify the sizes you want to include in the FON file, as FON fonts are bitmap-based and require fixed sizes.
Alternative tools
Other tools like BitFonter (commercial) or Fony (freeware) can also convert TTF to FON, but FontForge remains the most accessible and feature-rich option.
Tips for successful conversion
- Choose the font sizes you need before exporting, as FON files do not scale.
- Test the resulting FON file in your target environment to ensure compatibility.
- Be aware that some font features (like hinting or kerning) may not transfer perfectly to the bitmap format.
