Websites and web applications require WOFF2 for efficient browser font loading, while older Macintosh font collections are often supplied as SUIT files. Conversion is also useful when a legacy font must be edited, redistributed, or archived in a modern outline format.
What the SUIT format is
A SUIT file is a classic Macintosh font suitcase, usually identified by the .suit extension. It is a container for one or more Mac font resources, including naming data, character maps, metrics, and either bitmap NFNT resources or TrueType outline resources.
Classic Mac OS software created and used these suitcases; they are commonly encountered in font archives copied from older Macs, design applications, and legacy publishing projects. A suitcase can contain several styles or sizes, so inspect every face rather than assuming that one file represents one font.
What the WOFF2 format is
WOFF2 is a compressed webfont container based on OpenType and TrueType font data. Browsers support it through CSS @font-face, and its Brotli-based compression usually makes it substantially smaller than an equivalent TTF or WOFF file.
Use WOFF2 for website delivery, especially when bandwidth and page-load size matter. Keep the original outline font as the editable source; WOFF2 is intended for distribution and is not a convenient authoring format.
How to actually convert SUIT to WOFF2
Using FontForge
- Install a current desktop build of FontForge and make a backup of the original
.suitfile. - Open the suitcase with File → Open. If FontForge lists several faces, open and convert each one separately.
- Check the glyph outlines, character mappings, family name, style name, and vertical metrics in the font window. Correct naming or encoding problems before export.
- Choose File → Generate Fonts, select
WOFF2as the output format, specify an output filename, and generate the file. - Test the resulting file in a browser with a matching CSS declaration such as
src: url('font.woff2') format('woff2').
When FontForge cannot open the suitcase
Use Fondu to extract a TrueType resource from the Macintosh suitcase, then convert the extracted font:
fondu -ttf legacy.suit
Open the generated .ttf in FontForge and use File → Generate Fonts with WOFF2. If the WOFF2 generator is installed separately, the equivalent command is:
woff2_compress extracted.ttf
The command creates a WOFF2 file beside the input TrueType font. FontForge is preferable when you need to inspect or repair glyphs, naming records, or metrics before compression.
Using the online converter
You can upload the SUIT file to the free converter on 101convert.com and download the resulting WOFF2 file without installing software. Verify the output in a browser, because old suitcases may contain bitmap-only resources or multiple faces that require manual selection.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
A bitmap-only suitcase cannot be converted into clean scalable outlines by compression. If it contains no TrueType or other outline resource, a browser-ready WOFF2 font requires redrawing or replacing the font; automatic conversion cannot recreate missing vector data.
Older suitcase files may depend on a Macintosh resource fork. Copying them through systems or archives that discard resource forks can corrupt the font before conversion, so use a fork-preserving archive when necessary. Confirm that the file still opens in FontForge or Font Book before troubleshooting the converter.
Check the font license before embedding or redistributing the WOFF2 file. After conversion, test accented characters, ligatures, hinting, right-to-left scripts, and all required weights in the target browsers; conversion does not correct missing glyphs or invalid legacy encoding.
