DBX files usually contain Outlook Express mailboxes, while CSV is accepted by spreadsheets, databases, contact managers, and data-analysis tools. Converting the mailbox is useful when the messages must be inspected as rows, filtered in a spreadsheet, or imported into software that cannot read Outlook Express storage directly.

What the DBX format is

DBX is the proprietary mailbox format used by Microsoft Outlook Express, mainly in versions 5 and 6. A DBX file normally represents one mail folder, such as Inbox, Sent Items, or a user-created folder; Outlook Express commonly stored each folder in a separate file such as Inbox.dbx.

DBX is a binary container rather than a text document. Its records can include sender and recipient addresses, subject lines, dates, message bodies, HTML content, and attachment data. Outlook Express is obsolete, so DBX files are most often found in backups, old Windows profiles, or archives being migrated to newer mail software.

What the CSV format is

CSV stores tabular data as text: each line is a record and separators, usually commas, divide the fields. A mail export can use columns such as From, To, Cc, Subject, Date, Body, and Attachment names.

CSV is readable by Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, database tools, scripts, and many import utilities. It is smaller and easier to search or process than a mailbox database, but it does not retain DBX folder behavior, message flags, rich formatting, or attachments as native email objects.

How to convert DBX to CSV

The simplest method is the DBX/CSV converter available on 101convert.com, which can be used for free without installing software:

  1. Open the converter on 101convert.com and choose the DBX-to-CSV conversion.
  2. Select the relevant .dbx file. Keep the original DBX files unchanged as a backup.
  3. Start the conversion and wait for the mailbox to be parsed.
  4. Download the resulting .csv file and open it in a spreadsheet or text editor.
  5. Check the delimiter and encoding if columns appear in one field or accented characters display incorrectly.

For a local workflow, use a desktop mail-conversion utility that explicitly supports Outlook Express DBX input and CSV export. Select the DBX mailbox, map the required message fields to CSV columns, choose UTF-8 when available, and export one CSV per mailbox or folder. Utilities that only extract DBX to EML do not complete the conversion: EML extraction produces individual email files, which must then be imported into another program or processed with a separate export tool.

Quality and compatibility limits

Convert each DBX folder separately when the source contains several files; otherwise the folder structure may be lost. A CSV export represents messages as rows, so attachments may become filenames or separate extracted files rather than remaining embedded in the CSV.

Long message bodies can contain commas, line breaks, quotation marks, HTML, or semicolon-separated data. A correct exporter quotes such fields according to CSV rules. If a spreadsheet shows broken rows, inspect the file with a text editor and select the delimiter configured by the exporter.

Use UTF-8 to preserve non-ASCII names and message text. Verify dates, sender addresses, duplicate messages, empty fields, and the number of exported records against the original mailbox; damaged DBX indexes, password-protected files, and incomplete backups can prevent complete extraction.
