What the BUNDLE format is
In macOS audio software, .bundle usually identifies a package directory containing executable code, presets, samples, configuration files, or other resources. Audio Unit plug-ins use package bundles such as .component, while audio applications can store supporting instruments and effects in similar bundle structures.
BUNDLE is not a standardized audio codec and does not describe a sample rate, bit depth, channel layout, or compression method. Its contents depend on the application that created it; opening or editing the package with another program may make the associated plug-in or project unusable.
What the DMG format is
DMG is a macOS disk-image format. It stores files and folders in one mountable image and can use compression, encryption, a read-only layout, or a writable layout.
A DMG is useful for distributing an audio plug-in, sample library, project package, or installer while preserving the original bundle hierarchy. macOS mounts it in Finder, but a DMG is a container rather than an audio format and cannot be opened by an audio player as a sound file.
How to convert BUNDLE to DMG
Using Disk Utility
- Make a backup of the original BUNDLE. Do not rename its extension or edit files inside it unless the audio application's documentation requires that.
- Create a normal folder, for example
AudioPackage, and copy the BUNDLE into it. Keeping the bundle as one package preserves its directory structure. - Open Disk Utility and choose File → New Image → Image from Folder.
- Select the folder containing the BUNDLE, enter an output filename ending in
.dmg, and choose compressed for a read-only distributable image. Choose read/write only when the recipient must modify the mounted contents. - Click Save. Mount the resulting image and verify that the bundle opens or installs correctly before deleting the source copy.
Using the Terminal
Apple's built-in hdiutil is more predictable for scripted conversions and generally preserves macOS package metadata better than web upload tools. Put the BUNDLE inside a staging folder, then run:
hdiutil create -volname AudioBundle -srcfolder /path/to/staging -ov -format UDZO /path/to/output.dmg
UDZO creates a compressed, read-only DMG. Use -format UDRW instead when a writable image is required. Replace both paths with actual absolute paths; quote paths containing spaces in the shell.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
No audio quality is lost because this process copies package files rather than decoding and re-encoding audio. Compression can reduce the DMG size, but it does not reduce the size of an individual WAV, AIFF, CAF, or sample file in a way that changes its audio format.
DMG creation does not make an incompatible plug-in or project work on another macOS version, CPU architecture, host application, or operating-system security policy. Test the mounted image on the target Mac, and preserve code signatures, permissions, symlinks, and extended attributes when distributing executable audio plug-ins.
Online converters are unsuitable for this task: they generally treat BUNDLE as an unknown file, cannot reliably preserve macOS package metadata, and require uploading potentially proprietary audio assets. Use Disk Utility or hdiutil instead.
