How to convert xspf to m3u file

  • Audio

A car stereo, portable player, or older media application may accept M3U playlists but not XSPF. Converting the playlist changes its format and references; it does not copy or convert the audio and video files.

What the XSPF format is

XSPF, the XML Shareable Playlist Format, stores playlist data in XML. A track can include a media location, title, album, artist, duration, and other metadata. Locations may be local paths, file URIs, or network URLs, and may be absolute or relative.

Desktop players such as VLC, Clementine, and Audacious can create or export XSPF playlists. XSPF is readable in a text editor, but many hardware players do not support XML playlist files.

What the M3U format is

M3U is a plain-text, line-oriented playlist format. Each entry normally contains a local path, file URI, or streaming URL. Extended M3U files may begin with #EXTM3U and add #EXTINF lines containing display names and durations.

M3U has broad support in car stereos, portable players, smart TVs, VLC, Windows Media Player, Kodi, and streaming applications. It is also easy to inspect and edit with a text editor. M3U stores references rather than media data, so the referenced files must remain available at the paths written to the playlist.

How to convert the playlist

Using VLC media player

  1. Open VLC and choose Media → Open File, then select the .xspf file. VLC loads the referenced tracks into its playlist.
  2. Choose View → Playlist and test several entries. Fix missing files or inaccessible URLs before exporting.
  3. Choose Media → Save Playlist to File.
  4. Enter a filename ending in .m3u. In the save dialog, select the M3U playlist type if VLC provides a format list, then save the file.
  5. Open the result in a text editor and check that every path or URL is usable on the destination device. Copy the playlist together with the referenced media when the device cannot access the original folders.

VLC may write an extended M3U containing #EXTM3U and #EXTINF. That is accepted by most M3U-capable software, but a very old device may require simple M3U entries with no metadata lines.

Using 101convert.com

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: select the XSPF file, choose M3U as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Inspect the generated paths and test the playlist before transferring it to another device.

Compatibility limits

  • Relative paths depend on the playlist location. An entry such as Music/song.mp3 may work only when the M3U file is stored in the expected parent directory. Keep the playlist and media folder structure together, or edit the entries to use paths supported by the target player.
  • Path syntax is not universal. Some players accept Windows paths such as C:\Music\song.mp3; others require forward slashes or file URIs. Test the actual device, especially when moving a playlist between operating systems.
  • Network URLs remain usable only if the target player supports their protocol and the URLs are still active. Converting the file does not download or preserve online media.
  • M3U generally retains locations and optional display text, not every XSPF field. Ratings, artwork, application-specific XML extensions, and some metadata may be discarded.
  • Use UTF-8 output, often identified as M3U8, for accented or non-Latin filenames when the player supports it. Older hardware may require a local code page and may display such filenames incorrectly.
