What the PLA format is
PLA is not a single universal playlist specification. The extension is commonly associated with playlists created for SanDisk Sansa players, but other portable-player software may use it differently. A PLA file can contain text paths, device-specific metadata, or proprietary binary data, depending on its creator.
PLA files normally reference music stored on the player or in a synchronized library; they do not usually contain the audio. Back up the original file and identify the device or program that created it before editing it.
What the M3U format is
M3U is a plain-text playlist format supported by VLC, foobar2000, MusicBee, Kodi, and many other media players. Each line normally contains an audio-file path or URL. An optional #EXTM3U header and #EXTINF lines can store duration and display-title metadata.
M3U is easy to edit, share, archive, and move between applications. It contains references only: converting a playlist does not copy, compress, or re-encode any audio.
Convert a readable PLA file
- Work on a copy of the PLA file. Open the copy in Notepad, Notepad++, or another text editor.
- Check whether it contains one track path per line. Remove proprietary headers, blank lines, and metadata that is not part of a valid path.
- Change paths from the portable player to paths on the computer. For example, replace
\\MUSIC\\Artist\\Track.mp3withD:\\Music\\Artist\\Track.mp3if the music is now on drive D. - Add
#EXTM3Uas the first line, then save the file asplaylist.m3u. Use UTF-8 when filenames contain accents or non-Latin characters; use.m3u8if the target software specifically expects that UTF-8 extension. - Open the file in foobar2000 or VLC and check that every entry resolves. In foobar2000, use File → Open playlist, correct missing paths if necessary, and use File → Save playlist to export the corrected list as M3U.
Convert a device-specific or binary PLA file
If a text editor shows unreadable data or no usable paths, a generic online or desktop converter cannot reliably decode that PLA variant. Use the original device-management software, firmware utility, or a playlist manager that explicitly documents support for the exact player model and firmware.
If the software can display the playlist but cannot export M3U, open the corresponding music library in foobar2000, MusicBee, or VLC, select the same tracks in their original order, and save the selection as an M3U playlist. This preserves the listening order only if the tracks are identified correctly.
Rebuild the playlist when no importer exists
Copy the audio files from the device to the computer, add them in the required order to a new playlist in foobar2000 or MusicBee, and save it as playlist.m3u. Manual reconstruction is often more dependable than attempting to decode an obsolete proprietary PLA file.
Compatibility and path limitations
The result preserves track order only when the PLA can be read or the playlist is reconstructed accurately. It does not preserve device-specific settings, ratings, album art, or other application metadata.
Absolute paths such as D:\\Music\\Track.mp3 work only on systems with the same drive and folder layout. Relative paths are more portable, but the M3U file must remain in the expected location relative to the music folder. Check drive letters, slash direction, case sensitivity on network or Linux systems, filename encoding, and missing files on the target player.
Online converter availability
Reputable general-purpose services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar do not reliably support proprietary PLA variants, so they are not suitable as a default solution for this conversion. Uploading a PLA may also expose local folder names or device information. Use a local text editor or desktop media application unless a service explicitly identifies the exact PLA format and explains how it extracts playlist paths.
