Free online MKV to M3U converter

A music player, car stereo, or media server may require an M3U playlist even when the audio is stored inside an MKV container. This conversion creates a text playlist that points to the MKV or to audio files extracted from it; it does not turn audio data into a different codec.

What the MKV format is

MKV, or Matroska Video, is a multimedia container that can hold one or more video streams, audio streams, subtitles, chapters, and metadata. Audio-only MKV files are also valid and commonly contain lossless FLAC, PCM, or compressed AAC, Opus, or Vorbis tracks.

MakeMKV, OBS Studio, HandBrake, FFmpeg, and video editors can create MKV files. You may encounter them after ripping Blu-ray media, recording a screen or stream, exporting a video project, or storing multiple language and subtitle tracks in one file.

What the M3U format is

M3U is a plain-text playlist format. Each entry is normally a local path or a URL pointing to an audio or video file; optional #EXTINF lines provide track length and display title. An extended playlist begins with #EXTM3U.

M3U is supported by VLC, foobar2000, Windows Media Player, many car stereos, network audio players, and media servers. It is small, easy to edit, and can use relative paths, which helps keep a playlist with an organized music folder. M3U8 uses UTF-8 text and is preferable when filenames contain non-ASCII characters.

How to actually convert MKV to M3U

There is no media transcoding step when the goal is simply to list MKV files. Create a playlist containing the file paths:

1. Put the MKV files in a stable folder, such as Music/Albums.
2. Open a plain-text editor and enter #EXTM3U on the first line.
3. Add one relative or absolute path per line, for example Albums/Concert/track01.mkv. Use forward slashes for broad compatibility.
4. Save the file as playlist.m3u, choosing plain text rather than rich text. Use UTF-8 encoding for non-English filenames.
5. Open the playlist in the target player and verify that the player supports both M3U and the audio stream inside MKV.

VLC can create the file without manual editing: open the MKV files, arrange them in the playlist, then select Media → Save Playlist to File and choose M3U or M3U8. VLC saves the playlist references; it does not extract or convert the audio.

If the target device cannot decode MKV, extract or transcode the audio first, then place the resulting files in the playlist. FFmpeg can copy a compatible audio stream without quality loss:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:a:0 -c:a copy output.mka

For wider hardware compatibility, transcode to MP3:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:a:0 -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 output.mp3

Repeat the command for each source file and list the resulting .mka or .mp3 files in playlist.m3u. Quality, compatibility, and limitations

An M3U file contains references, not audio data, so creating or editing it causes no quality loss and does not reduce file size. Moving the playlist without moving its referenced files breaks absolute paths; relative paths work only when the folder structure remains unchanged.

A playlist cannot make an incompatible player decode MKV, FLAC, Opus, multichannel audio, or embedded subtitles. Some hardware accepts only MP3 or AAC entries and rejects container extensions such as .mkv and .mka. MKV files with several audio tracks require an explicit stream choice, such as -map 0:a:0; otherwise a tool may select the first track by default.
