  3. Creating a new assembly (SLDASM) and inserting the imported part(s).
  4. Saving the assembly as an SLDASM file.

Step-by-step conversion using SolidWorks

  1. Open SolidWorks and go to File → Open. Select your STL file and set the file type to STL.
  2. In the import options, choose to import as a Solid Body (if available) or as a Graphics Body.
  3. Use Insert → Features → Convert to Solid or Import Diagnostics to repair and convert the mesh if needed.
  4. Save the imported part as an SLDPRT file.
  5. Create a new assembly via File → New → Assembly.
  6. Insert the SLDPRT file into the assembly.
  7. Save the assembly as an SLDASM file via File → Save As.

Recommended software for STL to SLDASM conversion

  • SolidWorks – The best and most reliable tool for this conversion, as it natively supports both STL import and SLDASM creation.
  • Autodesk Fusion 360 – Can import STL files and export to SolidWorks formats, but may require additional steps.
  • FreeCAD – Can import STL and export to STEP, which can then be imported into SolidWorks for assembly creation.
