Understanding IAM and SLDASM file formats

IAM files are Autodesk Inventor Assembly files, used to store 3D assembly data, including references to individual part files (IPT) and their relationships. SLDASM files are SolidWorks Assembly files, which similarly contain information about how parts (SLDPRT) are assembled together in a 3D model. Both formats are proprietary and widely used in mechanical design and engineering.

Why convert IAM to SLDASM?

Converting IAM to SLDASM is often necessary when collaborating between teams using Autodesk Inventor and SolidWorks, or when migrating projects from one CAD platform to another. This ensures compatibility and preserves assembly structure for further editing.

How to convert IAM to SLDASM

Direct conversion between IAM and SLDASM is not natively supported in either software. However, you can use intermediate formats or specialized tools to achieve this:

1. Export IAM as STEP or IGES: In Autodesk Inventor, open your assembly and go to File → Export → CAD Format, then choose STEP (*.stp, *.step) or IGES (*.igs, *.iges). These are neutral formats supported by most CAD software.
2. Import into SolidWorks: Open SolidWorks and use File → Open to import the exported STEP or IGES file. SolidWorks will reconstruct the assembly as a new SLDASM file, with parts as SLDPRT files.
3. Save as SLDASM: After importing, save the assembly in SolidWorks using File → Save As and select SLDASM as the file type.
