How to convert otf to svg file

A design, web, or cutting application may require lettering as SVG paths instead of an installed font, or a logo may need to open in a vector editor without the original typeface. What the OTF format is

OTF (OpenType Font) is a font format introduced by Microsoft and Adobe. An OTF file normally contains a complete typeface: scalable glyph outlines, metrics, kerning, naming data, hinting, and sometimes OpenType features such as ligatures, alternate characters, and language-specific substitutions. Depending on the font, its outlines may use CFF/PostScript or TrueType data.

Type designers, publishers, UI and web designers, and desktop applications use OTF for editable text and consistent typography. The file is a font resource rather than a finished image; its layout depends on the selected characters, font settings, and shaping engine.

What the SVG format is

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based format for two-dimensional vector artwork. It can store paths, shapes, fills, strokes, gradients, and text, and browsers, vector editors, plotters, and cutting machines can scale it without rasterization.

When OTF glyphs are converted to SVG paths, the result can be edited as artwork and displayed without installing the font. It is suitable for logos, icons, signs, and fixed lettering. The converted paths normally stop behaving as text: you cannot reliably change the wording, apply font features, or reflow the characters as you could with the OTF.

Create fixed lettering in Inkscape

Use Inkscape when the required result is a word, phrase, logo, or selected characters rather than a complete font.

  2. Create a text object, then choose the required font, weight, size, and characters.
  3. Select the text and choose Path → Object to Path. Inkscape replaces the text with editable vector paths.
  4. Adjust nodes, fills, strokes, and spacing as needed. Keep an unconverted text copy if the wording may change.
  5. Choose File → Save a Copy or File → Save As, then select Plain SVG for broad compatibility or Inkscape SVG when Inkscape-specific editing data is required.

Convert the text to paths before sending it to a recipient who may not have the OTF installed. If the recipient must edit the wording as text, send the OTF with the SVG or keep the text object instead of converting it.

Export glyph outlines with FontForge

FontForge is useful when you need individual character outlines or want to inspect the font itself.

  1. Open FontForge and choose File → Open to load the .otf file.
  2. In the font window, select the required glyph or glyphs. Open a glyph for detailed outline editing if necessary.
  3. Choose File → Export, select SVG, specify the destination, and confirm the export. Menu details can vary between FontForge versions.
  4. Open the exported file in a vector editor and inspect compound shapes, winding direction, and alignment.

FontForge generally exports selected glyph outlines, not one ordinary SVG containing every character in the typeface. An SVG font is a separate, specialised output that retains font-like glyph data; it is not the same as path-based SVG artwork.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Layout features can be lost: kerning, ligatures, contextual substitutions, alternates, hinting, language shaping, and variable-font axes may not survive conversion to independent paths. Generate the exact final text before conversion when these features affect its appearance.
  • SVG fonts have limited support: SVG-font use in browsers and design software is deprecated or inconsistently supported. Path-based SVG is usually the safer choice for logos, illustrations, and cutting files.
  • File size varies: SVG is scalable, but a file containing many detailed glyphs can be larger than expected. Remove unused characters and editor metadata when the target software permits it.
  • Check rendering: inspect the result at high zoom for missing glyphs, broken compound paths, reversed fills, clipped contours, and changed spacing. Test it in the exact application or device that will use it.
  • Check licensing: a font licence may restrict extracting, modifying, distributing, or embedding its glyph outlines, even when the conversion itself is technically possible.
