Free online WOFF to SVG converter

A vector editor or illustration workflow may require SVG instead of a webfont, especially when you need to edit or archive individual glyph outlines. Converting the file can also produce a standalone vector asset for an icon, logo, or other fixed design.

What the WOFF format is

WOFF (Web Open Font Format) packages TrueType or OpenType font data with web-oriented compression and metadata. Websites load .woff files through CSS @font-face, and browsers use them to render selectable text. Web developers, type designers, and font editors such as FontForge, Glyphs, and FontLab commonly use WOFF files.

A WOFF file contains a complete font structure: glyph outlines, character mappings, metrics, naming information, kerning, and possibly hinting. It is not an SVG image and cannot normally be edited as ordinary vector artwork without a font editor.

What the SVG format is

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based format for paths, shapes, fills, strokes, and text. Its vector geometry scales without rasterization and can be opened or edited in applications such as Inkscape, Illustrator, and other vector editors.

For this conversion, SVG can mean either an ordinary SVG drawing containing one or more glyph outlines, or an SVG font whose glyph data is stored inside an SVG document. These are different outputs: an SVG font is not the same as text converted to paths in an illustration.

How to convert the file

For a direct file conversion, use 101convert.com: upload the .woff file, select SVG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated .svg file. This requires no software installation. Inspect the result afterward because the exact output structure depends on the converter and may be an SVG font document rather than a visible drawing.

For controlled glyph extraction, use FontForge:

1. Install and open FontForge, then choose File → Open and select the WOFF file.
2. Accept a font-validation warning only if the font opens and its glyphs display correctly.
3. Open the font’s glyph overview and select the glyph to export. A single glyph is the most reliable target for an ordinary SVG file.
4. Choose File → Export, select SVG, specify a filename such as icon.svg, and save it. Menu names and SVG export options vary by FontForge version.
5. Open the SVG in a text editor or vector application. If it contains an outline but is not arranged as visible artwork, copy or import the glyph path into Inkscape or another vector editor, position it, and save the result as an ordinary SVG drawing.

FontForge can also generate font-oriented formats from the complete font, but exporting selected glyph outlines is preferable when the intended result is an editable icon or illustration rather than an SVG font.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Conversion can preserve glyph outlines while changing or discarding font tables such as kerning, hinting, naming data, character mappings, and metrics. The SVG is therefore not guaranteed to reproduce the original font exactly.
• An SVG font has limited modern browser support and is not a suitable replacement for a webfont in most current websites. Keep WOFF for web delivery, or use WOFF2 when supported by the target browsers and build process.
• SVG is usually larger and less convenient than a font when a project needs many characters or selectable text. Export only the required glyphs when creating artwork or icons.
• Check the font license before extracting, modifying, redistributing, or embedding its glyphs. A webfont’s availability for download does not grant unrestricted reuse.
