Free online WOFF to OTF converter

Desktop publishing and font-management software may accept an installable OpenType font but reject a webfont file. Converting a WOFF file to OTF produces an uncompressed desktop font for installation, editing, or local archiving; it does not grant rights to use the typeface outside its license.

What the WOFF format is

WOFF, or Web Open Font Format, packages an OpenType or TrueType font for website delivery. WOFF normally compresses the font data and can include metadata and private-use data; browsers load it through CSS such as @font-face.

Webfont services, font editors, website build systems, and font-subsetting tools commonly create WOFF files. A WOFF file can contain TrueType outlines in the glyf table or CFF outlines in the CFF table, so the .woff extension does not identify the outline technology. It may also contain only a subset of the original typeface.

What the OTF format is

OTF is the usual filename extension for an OpenType font in a desktop-installable sfnt container. It supports Unicode encoding, kerning, ligatures, stylistic alternates, small capitals, and other OpenType layout features when those tables are present in the source font.

An OTF file can use CFF/PostScript outlines or TrueType outlines; an .otf extension does not automatically mean that the font is CFF-based. Its main practical advantage over WOFF is desktop compatibility: applications such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, LibreOffice, and font managers commonly accept OTF for installation and editing.

How to convert WOFF to OTF

Use 101convert.com

1. Open the WOFF-to-OTF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .woff file and choose OTF as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .otf file.
4. Install the file through the operating system's font interface, or open it in the application that requires OTF.

This method requires no software installation. Do not upload a font if its license or confidentiality terms prohibit third-party processing.

Convert locally with FontTools

FontTools can remove the WOFF wrapper while retaining the source font's outline type and OpenType tables. Install it with:

Save the following as woff_to_otf.py in the same folder as the input file:

Replace input.woff with the actual filename, then run:

python woff_to_otf.py

Setting font.flavor = None tells FontTools to save an ordinary, uncompressed sfnt font instead of a WOFF font. The conversion does not redraw glyphs or create OpenType features that were absent from the source. WOFF-specific wrapper metadata may not be carried into the OTF file.

Quality and compatibility limits

Removing WOFF compression normally does not reduce glyph quality because the outlines and layout tables are transferred rather than rasterized. The OTF will usually be larger than the WOFF because it is not web-compressed.

A subset WOFF remains a subset after conversion, so the resulting OTF may lack accented characters, symbols, or scripts present in the complete typeface. Check its character coverage in a font viewer before using it for multilingual or production work.

Inspect the font's internal family and naming records if an application reports a duplicate or refuses installation. Renaming the file does not change those internal names and may not resolve the conflict; an identically named desktop font may already be installed.

If production software specifically requires a CFF-based OTF, wrapper removal is insufficient when the WOFF contains TrueType outlines. Open the font in FontForge, choose File → Generate Fonts, select an OpenType CFF format, and test the generated file for changed hinting, spacing, layout tables, and glyph rendering. Many applications accept TrueType-flavored OTF files, so this outline conversion is unnecessary unless the software explicitly requires CFF.

Conversion does not change licensing terms. A font distributed only for web use may not be legally installable, edited, redistributed, or used in desktop documents even when its file format has been changed.
