What the 890 format is

Cavena 890 is a subtitle format associated with Cavena professional subtitling systems and broadcast workflows. It stores timed subtitle events, including dialogue text and timing information, and may also contain format or transmission-related control data. It is uncommon in consumer media players and general-purpose subtitle editors.

The .890 extension should not be confused with an unrelated file type. A file created by a Cavena workflow is normally opened or exported using Cavena software or a subtitle converter that explicitly supports Cavena 890.

What the ASS format is

ASS, or Advanced SubStation Alpha, is a text-based subtitle format for timed dialogue and styled captions. It can store script metadata, named styles, fonts, colors, outlines, shadows, margins, alignment, layers, screen coordinates, line breaks, and override tags.

ASS is useful for fixed-position captions, speaker differentiation, sign translation, karaoke timing, and effects that cannot be represented reliably in basic SRT. Aegisub, Subtitle Edit, and many software media players can read ASS, but hardware players, streaming services, and some editors accept only simpler subtitle formats or render only part of ASS styling.

How to convert 890 to ASS

Conversion can preserve dialogue and timing only if the source is a valid Cavena 890 subtitle file and the converter correctly interprets its time base. If the source uses frame-based timecodes, confirm the intended frame rate; a mismatch can make subtitles drift progressively rather than shift by one fixed amount.

Plain Cavena text and timing cannot supply ASS styles that were never present in the source. Fonts, colors, positioning, outlines, shadows, karaoke effects, and other ASS properties may need to be assigned afterward in Aegisub or Subtitle Edit. Broadcast-specific metadata, control codes, reading-speed instructions, and unusual line-break rules may also be discarded or require manual review.

Verify the character encoding for accented characters and non-Latin scripts. ASS is a separate subtitle track and does not embed captions into the video. To create permanently visible captions, render the reviewed ASS file with a video encoder such as FFmpeg; that process re-encodes the video and cannot be undone without retaining the original.
