What the TTC format is
TTC means TrueType Collection. It packages multiple TrueType fonts, often related family members such as regular, bold, italic, and condensed faces, in one file while allowing them to share font data.
Operating systems and desktop applications use TTC files as installed fonts. Microsoft Windows commonly includes collections such as msgeneric.ttc and other system font collections; East Asian typefaces and large multilingual families also frequently use TTC. Font editors such as FontForge can open a collection and expose its individual font faces.
A TTC is not a document format, so it has no pages, paragraphs, or images to export directly. Each face in the collection must be selected and rendered into a document or font specimen before producing a PDF.
What the PDF format is
PDF preserves page layout, typography, and print settings across operating systems and applications. It is suitable for sending a font specimen, proof sheet, character chart, or typesetting sample to someone who does not have the TTC installed.
PDF can embed the font data used for visible text, but the result is still a page description rather than a replacement TTC. A PDF normally cannot be installed as a usable font, and it does not preserve the collection's separate font faces as an installable family.
How to convert TTC to PDF
Using a document editor
- Install the TTC or add its individual faces to the operating system's font manager. On Windows, right-click the file and choose Install or Install for all users; on macOS, open it with Font Book. Install only fonts permitted by the license.
- Open LibreOffice Writer or another application that lists installed fonts, then create a document containing the sample text, headings, numerals, punctuation, and any characters that need checking.
- Select the required face from the font list. Repeat the sample on separate pages if the TTC contains several faces; a PDF export normally uses one selected face at a time.
- Export with File → Export as PDF or File → Export → Export as PDF. Keep the default text export when selectable and searchable text is required. Enable font embedding if the export dialog provides that option.
- Open the resulting PDF on a second device and verify the glyphs, page layout, and embedded-font status before sharing it.
Using the built-in online converter
You can use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the TTC file, choose PDF as the output format, and start the conversion. Since a TTC has no document pages, the service may produce a font preview or require a font face and sample settings; select the desired face when those options are available, then download the generated PDF.
Using FontForge
- Open the TTC in FontForge and choose the required member of the collection when prompted.
- Use FontForge's font view or a specimen feature to create a page showing the selected face and characters.
- Print the specimen through the operating system's PDF printer, such as Print → Save as PDF. This creates a PDF page from the rendered preview, not a direct font-container conversion.
Quality and compatibility limits
The PDF can show only glyphs included in the selected face. Missing characters may appear as empty boxes, and complex scripts may require an application with proper shaping support. A PDF made from outlined glyphs preserves appearance but loses selectable text; a PDF with embedded fonts preserves selectable text more effectively but can be restricted by the font's embedding permissions.
Converting the entire collection into one PDF does not combine its faces into a single editable font. Create separate specimen pages or documents for each face, and check the PDF's font properties if recipients must print or inspect the exact typeface.
