What the WOFF2 format is

WOFF2 is a compressed Web Open Font Format container for OpenType or TrueType font data. Websites use it with CSS @font-face rules to deliver fonts efficiently to browsers. Font editors, webfont generators, Google Fonts tooling, and build systems using fonttools commonly create WOFF2 files; you usually encounter them in a website’s font assets or a downloaded web-font package.

A WOFF2 file contains glyph outlines, metrics, naming data, and sometimes layout or variation data. It does not contain a page, paragraph arrangement, images, or other content that can be exported directly as a normal PDF.

What the PDF format is

PDF stores fixed page geometry, text placement, vector graphics, images, and document metadata for consistent viewing and printing. PDF readers are available on desktop systems, phones, tablets, and many print workflows.

For a font, PDF is useful for a specimen sheet, character chart, proof, catalog page, or archival visual reference. It is not a replacement for the original WOFF2 font: a PDF normally preserves rendered text and may embed a subset of the font, but it does not provide the same editable font resource.

How to convert WOFF2 to PDF

Use a browser and print a font specimen

1. Create an HTML file named specimen.html in the same folder as the WOFF2 file. Replace font.woff2 with the actual filename.
2. Put the font in the file with an @font-face rule and apply it to the specimen text. A minimal file is:

3. Serve the folder locally so the browser can load the font without local-file restrictions. From that folder, run python -m http.server 8000, then open http://localhost:8000/specimen.html.
4. Check that the specimen uses the intended typeface. In the browser, choose Print → Save as PDF or Print → Microsoft Print to PDF. Enable background graphics if the specimen uses colored backgrounds, and select the required paper size, margins, and scale.

• Some WOFF2 files use variable-font axes, color glyphs, or advanced OpenType features. Confirm that the browser or PDF workflow renders those features correctly; static PDF viewers may not preserve interactive variation controls.
• Font licensing can restrict embedding, redistribution, or conversion. Check the font’s license before sharing a PDF containing its rendered glyphs.
