MTS files from AVCHD camcorders often contain high-bitrate H.264 video that older players, conferencing systems, or embedded devices cannot decode. Converting the video to H.263 can improve compatibility with legacy hardware, but the result normally needs a container such as AVI because H.263 is a codec rather than a standalone file format.

What the MTS format is

MTS is an MPEG-2 Transport Stream file used by AVCHD camcorders, especially models from Sony and Panasonic. It commonly contains H.264/AVC video, AC-3 or LPCM audio, and metadata in a transport-stream container. You may encounter MTS clips after copying footage from a camera or from an AVCHD disc structure; desktop players such as VLC, MPC-HC, and FFmpeg can read them.

What the H.263 format is

H.263 is an older video compression codec designed for low-bitrate video conferencing and early mobile or web video. It produces smaller, lower-complexity video than modern H.264, which can help legacy decoders, but it generally provides worse image quality at the same bitrate.

H.263 is not normally saved as an .h263 file. The encoded stream is usually placed in an AVI container, sometimes in another container supported by the target device. Check the device documentation for its required container, audio codec, resolution, and H.263 variant, such as H.263 or H.263+.

How to convert MTS to H.263

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install a build that includes the H.263 encoder and MP3 encoding, then run:

ffmpeg -i input.mts -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v h263 -b:v 800k -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output.avi

Replace input.mts with the source filename. The command encodes the first video stream as H.263, retains the first available audio stream selection, converts audio to MP3 for broad AVI compatibility, and writes output.avi. Adjust -b:v 800k to match the receiving device; 300–800 kbit/s is typical for low-resolution legacy video.

If the H.263 encoder rejects the original dimensions, scale to a supported low-resolution frame size:

ffmpeg -i input.mts -vf scale=640:360 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v h263 -b:v 600k -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 96k output.avi

For interlaced camera footage, deinterlace before scaling with -vf yadif,scale=640:360. If the target accepts no audio, remove the audio mapping and codec options: ffmpeg -i input.mts -vf scale=640:360 -c:v h263 -b:v 600k -an output.avi.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the MTS file, select H.263 as the output video format, choose the available AVI or device-compatible container if offered, start the conversion, and download the result. Large camera recordings may exceed upload limits or take longer to process.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • H.263 is a lossy re-encode, so detail discarded during conversion cannot be recovered. Keep the original MTS file for archival use.
  • The output may be much smaller, but reducing resolution and bitrate usually has a greater effect on size than changing the container.
  • Some devices support only specific H.263 profiles, frame rates, resolutions, or bitrates. A file using standard H.263 may still fail if the device expects H.263+ or a particular AVI FourCC.
  • H.263 does not provide modern compression efficiency. Use H.264 or H.265 instead when the receiving device supports them.
