Understanding EASM and E3D file formats

EASM files are eDrawings Assembly files, primarily used for sharing 3D CAD data in a lightweight, view-only format. These files are created with SolidWorks eDrawings and are commonly used for reviewing and collaboration, but they do not contain full model data for editing.

E3D files, on the other hand, are AVEVA PDMS 3D Model files, used in plant design and engineering. They store detailed 3D model data for use in AVEVA's suite of engineering software, supporting full editing and manipulation of the model.

How to convert EASM to E3D

Direct conversion from EASM to E3D is not straightforward, as EASM is a view-only format and does not contain the full 3D model data required for E3D files. To achieve this conversion, you typically need access to the original CAD files (such as SolidWorks SLDASM or SLDPRT files) from which the EASM was generated.

If you have access to the original CAD files, follow these steps:

1. Open the original SolidWorks assembly or part file in SolidWorks.
2. Export the model to a neutral 3D format such as STEP (.step, .stp) or IGES (.iges, .igs) via File → Save As.
3. Import the exported file into AVEVA PDMS or AVEVA E3D using the software's import functionality (File → Import).
4. Save the imported model as an E3D file within AVEVA.

If you only have the EASM file and not the original CAD data, conversion is generally not possible due to the limited data in EASM files.

• SolidWorks: For opening EASM (if you have the original files) and exporting to neutral formats.
• AVEVA E3D or AVEVA PDMS: For importing neutral 3D files and saving as E3D.
